FromTheTop | Does having an STD make your LIFE INSURANCE higher? |
I want to ask a couple friends about getting life insurance. They don't know that I know they have an STD. I don't know how to handle the whole situation....any advice? |

All of your medical information is collected into a giant data base and the insurance companies have access to it. With that said an STD shows careless behavior and that would put you into a higher risk category for life insurance. I doubt if they cared how you contracted it, just that you have it. I used to do insurance physicals and that is one of the questions we asked potential customers.
They don't have to adhere to the HIPPA laws. They share information with health insurance companies. |

I know it affects health ins. rates but I do not know about life ins. |

Not sure but any thing that affects your health probably would make your insurance higher. If the STD is life threating than I would talk to my friends about their situation in a polite manner and tell them that you only brought it up because you care. |

Some STD's definately do require underwriting action. HIV, of course, is the primary one insurers are concerned about. However, other STD's can increase a person's mortality, such as syphilis, particularly if it's untreated.
If you have any questions, you should be able to call the insurer and speak with an underwriter.
FYI, the MIB does NOT collect information from health insurers, as has been suggested here. It only collects information from life insurers. So don't worry, folks, you can go to the doctor in confidentiality! If you want to know more, go to: http://www.mib.com/html/consumer.html |

If you are an insurance agent, you should have an underwriting guide that tells you what conditions might lead to rating or denial. If not, call your underwriting department and they can tell you. As the agent, all you can do is ask the questions, put down what they tell you and schedule the paramed exam if needed. It is up to them to be honest and not try to commit fraud with the company. Being dishonest can lead to not having the coverage when they need it. You should share this with them in a non judgemental way. |

Yes, it is still possible to get life insurance, but it depends on which STD. If it is AIDS, then forget it because I don't know any companies that will even consider that. However, if it is say herpes, they may still be able to insure you.
Important thing: if you are say, 37 yo, they can rate you up so that you pay the same as eg 57 yo. I advise you to look around for premiums, and then you can start bargaining. |
