Does health insurance cover orthodontic work?
I know it varies by all insurances, but I heard some health insurances cover this, while I thought only dental insurances would cover orthodontic work. Please let me know if this is true, thanks.

Orthodontic work is only covered under the medical policy when necessary for a facial deformity or because of injury. Otherwise it will be a dental policy. Often the dental does not cover orthodontics for adults or children over 16 yrs old.

Normally it would be dental insurance - and coverage is usually fairly small compared to the total cost.

I have both medical and dental insurance. When my children needed braces, it was only covered by the dental insurance. I would call your health insurance company and check.

Dental Plans usually also help with braces and orthodontics, which most dental insurance plans do not address. If dental insurance does cover orthodontics, it is usually only with an extra expensive rider added on.

No. Read your health insurance/dental coverage.

I've never seen a health insurance company cover this, and most dental plans severely limit the amount they pay for orthodontics - usually it's 50%, and a MAX of $1500 or such.

Some people pay extra to add dental coverage to their health insurance, and some few health insurances automatically cover dental. However, even most dental insurance doesn't cover orthodontic work, or only covers a small part of it. You have to look at the certificate of coverage for your plan, or for the plan you are considering buying.

I never heard of that. Only that the dental covers dental and medical medical (FYI: my medical also covered the first visit to an eye dr (copay), but I had to put the refraction on the vision plan).

Most dental plans limit the amount they pay for orthodontics - usually it's 50%, and a MAX of $1500 for each person. If you are in need of some orthodontic work you can go to carecredit.com. This is basically a healthcare credit card that has low monthly payment with no interest for 18 months. It will cover most cosmetic procdures that are not covered under your health/dental insurance. To be able to use this thought you must find a provider that accepts it. I found this to be very helpful when we had to pay for some dental work that had to be done and only a small amount was covered by the insurance. Our billed amout was $2100.00 and our payments were only $117.00 and this is with no interest.
