I hate being treated with insincere niceness. I hate a customer service person using my first name, period. Its insincere, and full of passive-aggressive manipulation. I know that might seem a bit extreme, but I hate feeling like a phone rep is trying to placate me unnecessarily. Its TOO nice. I'm OK with ma'am. You're only on the phone (optimally) between 3-5 minutes.... Which is not enough time to actually develop a rapport. Its fake. If I call, and have to wait on hold & then speak with someone, I've already taken 3-10 minutes of my day just navigating the IVR, and then explaining my issue... I don't even care if they know my name, I just need them to speed it up... I think its arrogant & pushy to use a callers first name, period. Using Mr. or Mrs is fine, as long as you can pronounce their name.... So is ma'am, if you're saying something like, "Yes, Ma'am" ... If they address you by your name first, its usually ok to respond in kind. But, not always. Especially if there's a large gap in age. Lots of things irritate me about insurance & the services they provide... I could go on... But I won't. |
