Does my doctors office have to tell me if they drop my insurance? ?
I've been going to the same pain doctor for a year. Last time I went, my insurance put it through as "out of network". I called to alert them of the error and they said as of July 1st, the doctor dropped the insurance. Shouldn't they have told me?? Now I have a $83.00 bill from them and a $30.00 copay from the hospital (it's an in-hospital clinic). Can they do this legally or do they not have to let me know???
Additional Details
I cannot get a SCS b/c I have to have MRI's every 6 months due to the rare tumor-causing condition I have in my knee, but thanks.

It would always be nice for the provider to let you know. But it is your responsibility to know. Talk to them about it, they might waive it -- once.

When you say "they said" and "shouldn't they have told me" and I have a bill from them" and "can they do this legally".

Sometimes you may be talking about the doctor and sometimes you may be talking about your insurance company.

You need to have a long discussion with both.

I would blame the doctor. Their office needs to check your insurance every time you check in- mine always do.

The doctor's office should have notified you at your appointment. I would write a letter of appeal to your insurance carrier and ask for an exception. There's a good chance they will do a one time exception and pay the bill.

They can do it. Should they have told you? Yes. Can you depend on them to tell you? No. Always verify - every time.

I have never been notified by any of my doctors when they've dropped the insurance. I imagine with all patients they care for, there is simply no way they can keep track of who is on what plan & so on, and leave the burden of responsibility on the patient.

My pain mgt. dr's office did the same exact thing but they dropped my insurance last year at the end of 2007. I had injections, trigger points, and other procedures as an outpatient network. I still paid my co-pays. My insurance told me that the dr's office billed them a certain amount (over $5,000.00) and I'm responsible for $2,500. I have not recieved a bill as of yet but if I do my husbands employer who deals with insurance companies said to call the dr's office and say to them that you were not aware that they went off of your insurance and it would have been more of a courtesy for them to tell you. If you ask them if you pay CASH HOW much will they be able to discount you? I was told by the ins. that they love the word cash. If you have been paying co-pays since they've been off the plan that would apply to the bill so if you say CASH then you can say "O.K. I paid a certain amount of money for every co-pay" and go on with whatever is left. Good luck in getting this taken care of. Either way if you did pay the co-pays after they went out of network then that would apply to the amount due that they are billing you for. You shouldn't have to pay any co-pay if they are out of network. Hope this helps. There are to many dr's out there who may try and get you to pay more including keeping your co-pay.

I'm going to send you something as I found relief finally with something called a SCS or spinal cord stimulator. It's FDA approved and patients have to go through a trial first to see if it will help them and if it does then they can get a permanent one in. I have RSD/CRPS, history of failed neck surgery, and my previous pain mgt. dr. didn't even let me think about trying to do the spinal cord stimulator. I tried it and it is wonderful. I could only keep it in for five days max to prevent infection and my insurance is covering the permanent one and I get it in on Thursday. Three more days till I'm pain free. :-) :-) :-)
