Does renters insurance cover items in my vehicle?
I have renters and auto insurance thru State Farm. I heard that my "high crime" items (cds, computers, etc) are not covered if they are stolen from my car and that my laptop wouldn't be covered if it was stolen while out of my townhouse. Is there any truth to this? I would hate to purchase extra insurance if it isn't needed.
Additional Details
My agent's secretary told me this, however I'm not sure how much to believe her since she is new and I've never dealt with her before.

Who did you "hear" from? Was it your agent? Your AGent will have the exact answer.

Usually there's a limitation to media used in cars - like cd's. And anything powered by the car - like a gps or removable stereo system - isn't covered on the renters policy.

Unless your laptop is used for work, it SHOULD be covered under your renters policy, but maybe your renters policy has a LIMITATION for theft outside your apartment, for unattended items.

YOUR AGENT is the person to ask - unless you feel like sitting down and reading your policy.

The coverage can vary by state. In PA, it would be covered subject to your deductible and policy provisions. You need to be able to prove what you had, receipts, pictures, something along those lines. The laptop is one of the limited items for theft or mysterious disappearance. You should review that with the Agent (or one of the licensed staff) to make sure you have adequate protection. Again, this can vary by state, so the best thing to do is set up a meeting with the agent - while you are in there, you should review all of your policies and needs.

My renter's policy covers those items mentioned, but I don't have a policy with State Farm. Ask your agent to give you some guidance and show you in the policy whether it is or isn't covered. Then purchase extra scheduled coverage for the items that aren't covered automatically.

Aslo ask your agent about liability limits. Most policies will have a limit for items like CD's, DVD's, and other electronic equipment. You don't want to be left out in the cold because you were ill-informed.

Renters insurance will cover items in your town house if stolen or destroyed by fire, maybe! You really need to record, inventory, and if possible photogragh every item you deem of value and would want the insurance to replace if lost or stolen.
The laptop should a seperate rider, the same as an expensive ring, and the insurance company should be informed if you really expect them to replace it. Same with any expensive software installed or left in the laptop at the time it is stolen. And just so you know, you can get your laptop Lo-Jacked.(trackable via satellite) the same as your car. Don't count on your auto insurance to cover it unless it is physically part of the car. CD's, ipods, cassettes, ect. You'll have to prove it was there. Good luck!

You would have to check with your agent if those items are covered, but in general your homeowners policy/renters policy will cover items stolen in your car.

You will have to pay the deductible, what ever you have that set at. But check with your agent to see if those specific items are covered.
