stan | Double house insurance query?? |
Having moved house in March 2007 i have just found out that having initially moved my house insurance over to the new property i am still paying insurance on the old property.
Swinton have told me that the insurer will claim that the property will still have been covered during the 6 month period and that i will not be able to get reembursed for any monies i have paid.
Is this right, surely i am not to blame and that it was swintons job to cancel the old cover once the change of address was notified. Additional Details The policy on the old house expires on the 29th sept 2007 so all the premium will have been paid, can i still get a refund of the 6 months i was not at the house? |

Techically, they are probably within their rights to do this - a change of address and insuring a new property doesn't necessarily mean that you no longer own the old property. It depends on the details of your policy (check to see if it is compatible with buy-to-let) - but it is entirely plausible you have changed billing addresses and own several properties...
However, if it is a genuine mistake on somoenes part (even yours) I would be amazed if they didn't do some sort of reimbursement. Speak to manager and complain politely, yet firmly - make it perfectly clear you will move to another insurer if this isn't rectified (indeed, move to another insurer if this isn't recitified). |

i don't know where you live, but i have never heard of transfering a homeowners policy from one property to another unless it is a renters policy. if you own the homes a new policy would have to be written on the new house and the old policy cancelled. if it is a renters policy and you haven't had a loss, just get them to move it and make sure its done in writing this time so you have the proof and its not a big deal. i think i personally would be looking for a new agent or company if this happened to me. |

It is your job to cancel the old insurance or to ensure that someone else does it on your behalf. However I would be very surprised if you could not get a refund if you make a polite and reasonable case for reimbursement. |

You can only try,but you should have checked as well. I don't think you have much hope. Always check you DD and SO monthly. When mistakes occur, it costs money |

If you sold your prior residence, all you need to do is show the proof of the sale (i.e. a copy of your settlement statement) and sign a request to cancel the policy effective the date of sale and your agent or insurance company will cancel the policy back to the date of sale and refund any unearned premium to you. Since it is over 30 days the request to cancel will have to be processed manually so it will probably take about 3 weeks but it will not be a problem.
Good Luck |

If they value their customers, they will backdate the charges.
I have had a lot of experience of home insurance, been selling it for over 10 years and most places will refund if you provide proof of dual insurance. |

I work for a insurance company. Many times a customer does a change of address and still wants to keep their old policy enforce. If I were you I would get a letter from my lawyer showing the date that I closed the sale of my old home. Then send that to the insurance company asking them to backdate your cancellation. When you have proved that you had no need for the insurance, they will give you a prorated refund. As long as your old policy was not with in a certain amount of time to it's next renewal( usually 30 - 90 days). You are entitled to a refund, but you do have to document it. |
