ER visit no insurance does this sound right..?
I had a panic attack one night. i had been drinking but i wasn't totally drunk. i went to the er because i thought i was going to die. they did an ECG and i sat there for about an hour and a half. then they sent me home. the hospital sent me a bill for $250 it was going to be over 400 but they gave me a discount. then 6 months later i get a notice from a collection agency saying i owe the doctor $433 well i paid it so it didn't mess up my credit. i never got the bill because it had the wrong address. i asked to see the original bill so i can see what i was charged for. it had three charges: ER visit: $273 ECG $55 and oximetry for oxygen saturation: $ 105 (no idea what this is?)
So can anyone tell me if any of this sounds right? paying almost $800 for an ECG and then send me home. They honestly didnt do anything for me.

Sounds about right. Oximetry measure how well oxygenated your blood is, often with a clip on your fingertip. The equipment is expensive.

The doctor may have privileges but not be on staff, so his time is billable separately.

The ER is the most expensive way to get medical treatment. If you believe you're dying, though, money is no object, right?

Be glad you were wrong, pay the bill, and remember that in all likelihood, some of the people who were there when you were won't ever pay a bill, or smile at a child, or go online ever again.

Yes, it sounds right. There's a charge for the ER, hospital facility, charge from the doctor(s) who treated you, charge for any tests, and charging for any treatment and/or supplies. They all get billed seperately.

You get charged based on services rendered, not how happy you are with the result.

I work for a large Midwest hospital system, and it sounds like you got off pretty cheap.

The $250 you paid was the hospital charges for the ER. (And that's darn cheap for hospital ER charges...it costs a few hundred just for you to walk through the door, then any treatments/tests you receive add more to the bill.)

And the doctor who sees you bills his time separately...that second bill you received was for the doctor fees, and sounds reasonable.

Yep...sounds reasonable. The only thing I would have done differently if I were you would have been to ask for a discount on the doctor charges. Since you qualified for a discount on the hospital charges, you may have been able to get a reduced, cash-paying discount from the doctor too.

That sounds low to me. Pay it and count yourself lucky that it is not in the thousands.

Yup, that sounds right. Your lucky you even got an ECG with no insurance. Most ER's do just the bear minimum if you don't have insurance. Then your even more luck that they gave you a discount. Most of the time if you don't have insurance you pay about 30% more. This way if they have to write you off as a no pay, they get a better tax deduction.

It does sound right. ECG are expensive, plus you have to pay for it to be interpreted by the doctor. Oxygen saturation is the device that they put on your finger to measure how much Oxygen you are getting in your body. I know it sucks but medical facilities are the first to report you to the credit bureau because 9 times out of 10 they dont get $ from the patients.

Yes, it's expensive to visit an ER so it sounds like you got off cheap.

uhm... first and foremost, you should have told the collection agency to send proof that you owed the bill. Chances are you did owe it, however from what you said, it seems like you already paid $250. What was that $250 for? Sounds like you paid for the ER visit twice. I suggest you demand a refund from either the hospital or the collection agency for that $250.

Otherwise, the rest sounds right. There's nothing the emergency room could have done for you unless they found something wrong, then they would have run a full battery of tests and you would be REALLY up the creek on $$.

I think that you got off extremely cheap! Had that happened at the hospital in my town the Hospital charges would have been at least double. The ER visit would have been a minimum of $400. The ECG would have been closer to $250 and the oximetry would have been over $100! That would make the total over $1500! The reason they did "nothing for you" most likely is there was nothing wrong with you!

The oximeter tells them what the oxygen saturation of your blood is and gives them a constant reading on your pulse.

You are wrong in the fact that they did do something for you. They ran tests on you, trying to determine what the problem was. The tests determined there was nothing medically wrong so they sent you home. Simple as that.

Not only that, but ER personell really don't like drunks showing up for treatment when there is nothing physically wrong with them, except perhaps a bit of hypochondria, brought on by the alcohol. It takes up valuable time they could be using to treat someone who really needs treatment.

Yes, it sounds right. That's what happens when you go to the ER. Lay off the booze.
