Family health insurance plan for 19yr old, 17yr, and few day old baby? Need it to marry.?
My fiance and I want to get married right away and have been wanting to for a while but had to wait until the insurance plan he had at his job kicked in. That would have been next month but now he is getting another job and going back to college next semester so we won't have that insurance. I can't marry him until we have the insurance thing figured out because I won't be covered under my parents' once we are wed and they won't let us till this is done. This is more urgent than ever that we get married now because my parents are driving us mad trying to control everything. I just gave birth to our baby girl on Tuesday so we need to find a good family plan. If you have any advice on what insurance carriers have good, hopefully inexpensive coverage please share. Oh and we are all in great health so existing health conditions won't be a factor in finding insurance. And the state is VA.

You may not be able to get a family plan right now.

First of all, most insurers for privately purchased plans will require the infant to be at least 8 weeks old befor they will be covered. And they have to pass a medical exam. (The only way you can generally add an infant to a plan immediately is if you already had the plan in effect, or if its a group plan through an employer.)

I tried plugging your information into ehealthinsurance.com and there were zero plans you were eligible for. Every plan either had a stipulation that the spouse had to be older than 17 and/or that the infant had to be at least 8 weeks old.

Perhaps your fiance should have considered these factors *before* he left the job that would have provided insurance to him. At least he could have added the baby, if not you. (Once you become a parent and a husband/wife, you have to start looking at the big picture...your actions don't just affect yourself anymore.)

Even if you could find a plan that would allow you as a 17 year old spouse and to enroll an infant younger than six weeks, the premium is likely to be $500 a month or even more. Health insurance is not cheap. If there is any way that your fiance can get group coverage through an employer, that would be your best bet.

Prices range from $130-$530 per month for your family in VA., from Blue Cross Blue Shield. http://www.anthem.com. From this site you can get a quote and apply for coverage. I looked over the plans briefly and liked the Individual KeyCare Preferred plan.
Because you are healthy it would be prudent to take a high deductible such as the $2500 option. This will lower your monthly premium, yet give you excellent coverage for doctor visits, prescriptions, immunizations, physicals, etc, without having to meet the deductible first.
As you may know, you must purchase your health insurance in the state that you reside, and the website mentioned above should be of great help to you.
It is also possible to insure just your baby with this company.

I've been in your shoes. I have an 18, 17, 16, 2 and one on the way. My husband does contract work and the plans come and go. I started buying my non-toxic products for my home from this direct marketing company and then found out they had insurance as well. It's better than nothing. So, there is hope for yall. Just take care of that baby. I was a senior when I was first pregnant and on my step fathers insurance. Insurance really shouldn't stop you from getting married though, just keep working hard and praying and things will work out. Jennifer

Have him join the the military. free coverage and he can still go to school.

I am a health insurance agent in Utah. My advice is to type "virginia health insurance" into google or yahoo and try to find an agent online who is independent and can give you comparative quotes from different sources. You can also check in to state funded programs if your income isn't very high. Hope that helps!

Please be aware that the baby is not covered by your parents' policy. A family plan covers the insured person, that person's spouse, and that person's children, but not that person's grandchildren (unless, due to incest, they are also the person's children or spouse).

Sadly, there are no "cheap" private health insurance programs out there that I'm aware of. If you are emancipated or marry your fiance, your income level may be such that you qualify for medicaid in your state. The only other option would be for you or your fiance to get a full-time job that provides an adequate income and insurance benefits to supprt you and your child. He could still go to college part-time or enroll in an on-line university program--there are many legitimate ones out there. I assume that you need your parents' permission to marry in your state if you're 17. I realize you feel your parents are being very controlling--and maybe they are--but, in this area, they are just watching out for your and your baby's best interests. At least as a dependent of your parents, you qualify for insurance coverage. I'm sure they love you and just want to be sure that you're taken care of. Congratulations on your new baby.

Shoulda spent your $$ on rubbers. It's ok, there's always free clinics to care for you and your "family."

I write with three different companies in Virginia; however, there are different plans available in northern Virginia than in the rest of the state -- can you tell me what part of the state you're in?

If you'd like me to work up some quotes for you, please email me.

Oh, and I forgot to say: Congratulations!

A 17 year old having a baby ?
Holy ssss , you are so lucky your parents are still covering you .
Your baby's daddy won't get insurance unless he works or pays at least $500 a month for family .
And any job a 19 yr old takes over college , means being poor forever .
Did No One explain the huge costs of having a family to you ?
Don't they cover it in high school now ?

Teens with a baby are pretty much doomed to poverty unless they are totally grateful to their parents so that the parents help .
Many parents would kick you both to the curb for such selfish and ignorant behavior .

If you have 2 brain cells left , START being so nice to your parents for not putting you on the street and letting you fend for yourself ( and have to become a hooker to feed the baby )

OR , keep being a snot and learn what a street / bag ladys life is like .
