You can contact the American Council of Life Insurers. They maintain a list of member insurance companies and submit the name, address and social security number to see if there is a life insurance policy with one of there members.
Look at cancelled checks for two years. Is there a payment to an insurance company in the cancelled checks?

Normally this info is stored in the family safe or safe deposit box.
If he was working, check with his employer to see if he had life insurance through his workplace.
Another option is to go through his bank and credit statements over the past couple of years, make a list of any insurance type companies he was paying and go from there....

Thoroughly go through several years of bank statements. You can not pay for a policy in cash so there should be a record in the bank statements. Most policies are billed monthly but many are paid quarterly, semi annual or annually.
