Steven S | Five years ago I dropped a term life policy in favor of a universal life policy.Questions then, still have!? |
At the fifth year the cash value will be just a little more than I have paid in. I bought this policy at the suggestion of my financial adviso. I am retired and do not need this much insurance. My question is should I cash in the universal life and invest it in something with less or no fees and get better overall returns? Yes, I know I have already paid most of the commission and upfront fees already! |

Your financial advisor didn't give you a good advice. Life insurance are not investments for retirement. Why would you keep your investments in a life policy? If your other insurance such as car, home, or health don't have a savings plan in it, why is it that only life insurance has such plans? Its because insurance companies make huge profits off the cash value. Do you know that if you die someday, the life insurance company will keep your cash value? Or if you ever wanted to use it, you have to take a loan out. The main purpose of life insurance is to protect your family's income in case something happens to you. It's not a way to build wealth for retirement or any other long term goals. Since you are retired, no one is dependent on your income. So, there is no need for you to have life insurance. If you believe your entire family (children, brother, sister, and spouse) can't afford your funeral, then get a small 20 year term policy of $10,000.
Depending on how much cash value you have in your universal life policy, you may be able to move the cash value into a variable annuity using a 1035 exchange. Variable annuities protect you from dying too soon and outliving your retirement income.
If there is not much cash value in the policy, then it would be wise to surrender the policy and open a Roth IRA and invest in a mixture of mutual funds and government bonds. You may need to wait a couple years after opening a Roth IRA to access your funds. If you don't want to accept such risks by investing in mutual funds, then open a money market account. They earn around 5% interest per year. |

universal life policy is very flexible.
you can reduce the amount of coverage, so the premium will be desreased too. |

What you have to keep in mind is that life insurance is not a investment. Investments and Life Insurance are two different things. You are retired and you say you don't need the insurance but you may need it for estate purposes. Keep this policy because it can pay the taxes on you estate so that your loved one keep what you own. Talk to your advisor about estate planning. |

If you cash it in, you won't have life insurance anymore. If your health is good you could apply for a new term policy, but don't cancel your current plan until you get an issued policy. A life insurance quote is not a promise that you will be paying a set amount. |

Just like has been suggested by another person....sit down and determine exactly how much life insurance it is you do need at this time. Then if you need less , you can request that the face amount be lowered. Keep in mind that life insurance is NOT for you but for your the ones you care about after you are gone. In my opinion if the premium is not hurting your budget then you can NEVER leave too much money for your family/loved ones!! Keep in mind that life insurance proceeds pass to you family with NO taxes and anything else you put it in will be tax at your death!! If you dont need as much life protection ....then yes you can lovwer the "face amount" and it will lower the cost of the plan. Just think about what you have said...you have a plan that will pay your family WAY more than any other investment would if you die tomorrow and that at this point ...if you did need to cash it in...you would get EVERY dime you have paid into it, plus some!! Doesnt sound like a "bad" deal to me!! You have life insurance for your family NOT as an investment! Keep them seperate! |

A universal life policy is awful for investing. If you want to invest, you have to look into IRA's, open funds things of that nature. Insurance agents are pretty much out of thier minds when suggesting a life insurance for retirement planning. |

If you don't need the coverage, get ride of it.
Before you cash it in, you may want to consider a life settlement.
Depending on your age and current health, you may be able to sell the policy for more money than the cash surrender value. |

IF you don't need the insurance, of course cash it in and get better returns just about anywhere else!! No use throwing good money after bad! |
