I am purchasing a 1954, wood frame home in central Florida.
Nobody wants to touch it, I can get the state insurance for $1700.00 a year, WOW that is expensive!!!
Does anybody out there have a better option or idea on how to get insurance at a reasonable rate?
I tried AARP, they won't cover Florida even though my car insurance is with them, I tried others as well with no luck.Please I need some help here I'm getting desparate

The Shop & Compare Rates website the state created is worthless and full of companies that haven't wriiten a new Florida homeowners insurance policy in years.
The only site I know of that you can use that will tell you exactly who is writing homeowners insurance in Florida by county is called The Home Insurance Buyers Guide located at:

I just checked the site recently and it does have a decent number of companies still writing new Florida home insurance in central Floriday.
I learned about the site in this Florida Today article:

If you use The Home Insurance Buyers Guide and still can't find a company, then you will know for sure that Citizens is your only option.

Try a brokerage house that sells a bunch of companies insurance maybe they will ahve something for you..any way 1700 a year really isnt that bad for florida considering wind and flood are so high here...citizens might be your only hope. If you used a Real Estate agent ask them and also ask the current homeowner who insures them.

Here's a Florida agent: www.huttinsurance.com who represents a bunch of companies.
BUT, the FL homeowners insurance market is a MESS. Until recently, Citizens ( the state fund) was the only taker. In the past six months or so, there have been several new startup companies who are interested in writing homeowners, also, HOWEVER, I haven't found ANY who are rated by AM Best (so I won't recommend an unrated carrier).
That state fund is PROBABLY the only place you're going to find coverage, if you've already looked around.
If Hutt isn't close to you, you can also find an independent agent at www.iiaa.org website.
If you're looking for, say, Georgia rates, or Michigan rates, in Florida, it's not going to happen. Florida is in Hurricane Alley, and the rates are accordingly high. As you found out from contacting AARP, there are a lot more companies NOT willing to write insurance in FL, than there are, willing. Even some EXISTING companies that write homeowners, won't write a new policy.

I am a central Florida resident and I know that the insurance issue is a difficult one. All I can say is keep trying every place that you can find. My insurance has doubled annually over the past few years and I've had to raise the deductible to an outrageous level just to afford the premiums. I've called other companies and no one wants to help me because I had hurricane damage in 2004.
Allstate doesn't insurance homes in Florida anymore and I think State Farm is too busy cancelling homes to write any new ones, but you might want to try them.
