I lost a ring, filed a claim with State Farm, got it replaced, and found the ring underneath the fridge. I actually thought it was stolen. It went missing when there was construction going on in our house, so I assumed one of the workers stole it. We aren't in a financial situation right now to pay the claim money back. Will they want cash or the ring back? I'm worried. I can't keep the ring and keep quiet, the guilt would be on my conscience! But I also can't afford to pay them back. Will they take the ring back or expect us to pay back the cash?

I didn't commit insurance fraud. I truly thought it was lost/stolen. That's what I pay for. The fact that I found it and want to give it back shows I didn't commit fraud. |

Normally, you can do one of three things: 1 - Give the insurance company the value of the new ring they bought for you 2 - Give the insurance company back the ring they bought for you or 3 - Give the insurance company the ring you had claimed was stolen.
You will need to call your adjuster that worked with you on the claim & find out your company's policy on this.
This is something that happens. I lost a ring 2 yrs ago & claimed it on my insurance (it was a very sentimental family ring). The company paid the value of the ring and I had deposited the check but had not yet bought a replacement. I had spoken to a jeweler about it - I had an appraisal & photo - but had not had a chance to get something else. Anyway, my son found it about 2 months later - I thought I had lost it in town but actually lost it at home - he was so excited - anyway, I called the company & sent them back the money. It was a very simple process, they were very fine about it & didn't question the validity of the original claim.

Notify the insurance company that you found the ring and if they want it back or you will be willing to make payments to them to repay them. and keep it. That is the only honest thing to do.
The insurance company will be happy to hear from you and work with you. |

The ring belongs to the insurance company. Give it to them. They will be impressed with your honesty. They will probably accept the ring and le it go at that, and you won;t be living with any guilt. |

You turned in the claim with a clear conscience and you were being honest when you made the claim. I agree with "Bell" that you should hand the ring down or up to another family member if your conscience is really bothering you. Or...put it away for that purpose at a later date if you don't have anybody in mind at this time. |

Save yourself a headache, keep the ring or throw it in the ocean (if your conscience bites).
The insurance company will likely waste a shitload of your time and theres a chance they will require cash back.
People of conscience get screwed in this day and age, sad but true. |
