Insurancepro | Funeral ettiquette? |
My husband and I own and operate an insurance agency. One of my clients is my sister's ex mother-in-law and father-in-law. My sister and her ex-in-laws do not get along at all. I have never had a problem with them as clients. They have told me that they like us very much (as insurance agents) My Client's son, my ex-brother-in-law, will soon pass away. Would it be professional of us to attend the services? Additional Details OK, I have to add more:
I am not concerned about my sister's feelings about this. It is them who is holding the grudge, not her. They told her she will not be welcome at the funeral. I am her sister, so will I be welcome? Will they think I am spying on them for her or will I remind them of her and make everyone uncomfortable, especially his new wife? |

Personally, I would not attend the funeral. If you want to express your sympathy, do so by sending a nice floral arrangement.
Why do I think you shouldn't go? Well first, he's no longer your brother-in-law, and the fact that his parents are your clients is really irrelevant in my opinion. I mean, do you go to the funerals of all your clients' family members? Secondly, these people don't want your sister there. In that case, it just seems inappropriate to me for you to go. Yeah, maybe your clients won't mind if you go, but it doesn't seem fair to me that you'll be there but your sister - who was married to the dead guy - isn't allowed to go. |

If this is someone that you are related to and you feel a connection to the family and this person that is passing away, ettiquette or not you should go. Just because you are the insurance agent, that does not mean that you should avoid a funeral to say your last good byes. I say, if you want to go then you should. |

Of course. Funerals are a way of paying your respects to the family and a time for you to say goodby. While your sister's marriage did not work out, that does not mean that your brother-in-law never existed. Go pay your respects and don't let your sister drag you into her relationship problems.
It never hurts to be polite and have empathy for people who have lost a loved one. It is about them and not about your sister. |

You sister's feelings or relationships with her ex in-laws have nothing to do with you. You may go to any funerals you like. |

If you want to attend the service, than you should. The soon to be deceased's relationship to your sister should be of little concern to you. You have a good relationship with the parents and the funeral is closure for them, and as friends you should support them. If you're uncomfortable, you could attend the viewing, only or the service but not the grave side service (if there is one), nor the funeral reception.
If you are seriously concerned with your sisters feelings (though I think its unhealthy for her to hold this type of grudge) you could talk to her now, and if it will cause a problem with family, skip the whole thing and pay a personal visit to the parents after the son is gone and the service is in the past, not to far past. |

Yes, even tho the whole family thing it would be vary polite for you to go and bring a gift not to big but not to small. Your client will most likely tell people about how polite and professional you guys were. = ) |
