General Contractor looking for General Liability Insurance for another state?

I am currently a Residential contractor looking for General Liability Insurance that would cover me in other states as in Georgia. I was wondering if anyone knowes of an Insurance company that may underwrite my buisness for structural repairs. It may seem as simple as asking my insurance company"state auto" but they are having a hard time finding a company that would underwrite this.

Your OWN general liability policy most likely will cover you! I've seen HUNDREDS of these, and some of the rating is based on "radius of operations", but that's mostly the auto part. The standard liability policy in the US has a territory of "The United States, it's territories and posessions".

If your business is "structural repairs", there will no doubt be more questions - like is it below ground, or above ground? And is residential limited to single family homes, under four units, or above four units?.

You need a new agent - a local, independent agent who can farm this out to a couple wholesalers to get a taker. If you haven't had GL coverage before, then you'll likely end up in the surplus market - ESPECIALLY if you'll be subbing out more than 25% of the work (because actually that makes you a GENERAL CONTRACTOR). But there are quite a few carriers that do your line of business. It's just not going to be a $500 policy, ya know?

Use a search engine, like Yahoo, to find commercial insurance agencies in a larger city near where you intend to work or in Atlanta. They would be able to find coverage for you.

For a simple GL policy, you can often go to your auto/home carrier, but in this case I would look to someone that specializes in commercial insurance. Try the business insurance directory - http://www.insuremywork.com

If you already have GL coverage it covers anywhere in th USA unless it has a State limitation , which is rare. If you do work in another State that was not foreseen when you took the policy out, it is automatically covered. However when they audit the policy at the end of the year they will charge for the work in the States you are working. You realy need to work with an indendent agent in your area where you do the most work. Stay away from internet sales and not meetingg the agent in person unless you know what you are doing from a risk manangemnt standpoint.
