I have a preexisting problem from having my daughter. I lost my health insurance in August. We are going on a family plan through my husband's work. My old doctor referred me to a specialist. If I go to the consultation before my insurance kicks in will the insurance cover any procedures after I get the it? If I wait to go to the consultation after my insurance kicks in, will they let me go since my old doctor is the one who referred me or do I have to get another referral? They will not give us an insurance handbook until we are all filed through, otherwise I would try to look it up. |

Since you had a lapse in coverage, wait until the new insurance kicks in and check to see if you have any waiting periods. (During which, if you get diagnosed with something, it's like a pre-existing condition.) Referrals are specific to insurance company, so unless you're staying with the same company, the referral will be useless. |

You should ask his HR dept these questions. They may have a waiting period for pre-existing. It is not common, but happens.
What type of insurance it is (HMO,PPO) drives what procedures need to be followed when seeing a specialist. Your old referral will not work if you are no longer covered on that insurance. If you can't get these answered, and you can wait to be seen, wait. |

Absolutely wait to go to the new doctor until you have proof that your new coverage is in effect. Does your new insurance have a pre existing condition waiver? Since you had a gap in coverage and didn't COBRA from August to now you are not covered under HIPPA laws and the new company may exclude any pre existing conditions (usually for 12 months). |
