Good health/medical insurance?
I need some help so I can help out my brother. Hes 26 and doesn't have any health or medical insurance and ive been getting on his case a lot about it latley. What are some free or cheap state insurance companies in Connecticut that I can have him check out. Because he doesn't make a lot of money, so he doesn't have a lot extra to spend a month. Thanks.

Most likely your brother wouldn't be eligible for any free help offered by the state, especially if he is just an average overall healthy 26 year old.

But it's good for you to be pushing him to look into some sort of coverage because we just never know when something could happen, even if we tend to believe we don't need insurance because we don't go to the doctor or don't think we can afford it so we risk it. If an accident were to happen, your brother would be in a financial mess for a long, long time and you don't want that to happen.

My cousin actually had to file bankruptcy at the age of 22 because she had no insurance, didn't think she needed it & didn't want to fork over the extra $200-300 every month at the time for it, and she was involved in an accident that landed her in the ICU and long story short a huge medical bill that was completely on her shoulders. Sure she could have set up a payment plan of sorts, but she would have been paying it off for the rest of her life pretty much and it's awful but they figured that the bankruptcy would at least be over with sometime in the next 10 years.

I'm not sure what your brother does for a living or if his employer offers health insurance, or even whether or not he has any health conditions, etc. But your best bet would be to start by speaking with a local insurance agent who will be able to at least see what options are available and if there is anything that is within a price range that he can afford. At the very least he can look into some sort of high deductible or catastrophic type coverage plan that will get him the lowest monthly fees, and yet be in place should something major happen.

A plan like that most likely won't cover any sort of appointments, check ups, etc throughout the year, he will need to pay for that out of pocket. Some offices, both dental & medical, will offer a discount for those who are paying cash, all you have to do is ask for it. If you find that no providers in your area offer the cash discount option, you can also look into another option which will allow your brother to save on his out of pocket expenses through a discount dental/medical plan organization, Ameriplan.

I have used the plan for over 2 years now and love it. You can take a look and search for providers in your area by going to this site, http://www.mybenefitsplus.com/cberney

And the plan that offers everything for $39.95/mo. also includes hospital advocacy which will help out in the event something happens and he lands up in the hospital and the bills exceed $2500.

Hopefully you will find some sort of help with all of this. If there is anything else that you'd like to know or if you have questions for me, feel free to send me a message here through my answers profile.

Good Luck!

TeddyBear6,

You sound like a great sister! Your brother's a lucky guy.

There's a very good article at eHow that discusses how to get health insurance for you and your family when you don't have a job that covers you:

http://www.ehow.com/how_2367563_keep-health-insurance-lose-job.html
How to Get Health Insurance

Take a look at it, as it covers all the major possibilities for getting insurance, and gives some great resources you can use.

All the best.

Google "Assurant Health" and "Golden Rule Insurance". If they are licensed in your state, they will have local independent agents to help.

If you brother doesn't have life insurance, I also recommend that as well.

He might just want to talk with his local auto insurance agent.

There are no cheap insurance policies. If they sound cheap, they have a high deductible.
