got laid off at my job because of a hurricane, and for some reason I still have health insurance through them, but I'm not paying any premium! It's really strange. I stopped working for them in September, and they said my health coverage would end around Oct. 15th'ish. Well I thought it ended, until I went to the doctor and thought I'd give it a try - doubtful that it would work, I tried anyway. Sure enough, the claim went through! I went online to check the status of my coverage, and to my amazement, I am still covered. It is now January 2009 and I still have full coverage... how is this happening? Who is paying Aetna? Someone has to be... and it's not me. I know its not COBRA because I'm not paying anything, and COBRA is usually expensive. Has this ever happened to anyone? I consider this a MAJOR blessing that I don't want to end. Someone please give me advice on what I should do to not mess this up.

The only ones who can answer this is your former employer. You can take a chance and see how long it lasts or call them and ask about it. Did they give you any written info when you left? Check that.
Remember, if it was an error, they can retroactively terminate your coverage, so even if the insurance company pays for services and your insurance is later terminated, the providers can look to you for payment. |

The problem is when they fix the problem and go back to cancel the insurance properly ALL of your claims will bounce.
You should pretend it's not there and get some insurance. |

No, your life insurance will eventually expire. When my wife was laid off, it was good for about 2 more weeks. It will expire soon usually. Just ask if your not sure. |

Well, you better pray to God that you get a life threatening illness, or you're in an auto accident that leaves you disfigured, crippled or paralyzed for the rest of your natural life. Because otherwise, that free insurance is just gonna go to WASTE.

hmm that is very odd! Don't know what to tell you but just be happy that you do have coverage I just hope your not going to have to pay for the coverage in the future you might want to check it out! |

Are you in a Union? They may have an agreement with the company to continue paying for your coverage for up to 6 months if your laid off. If your Union call a local rep and ask. |

NO one is paying Aetna. Sometimes it can take the insurance companies up to six months, to catch up on the paperwork, and take you out of their computer system - or mark you as "cancelled".
Eventually, though, they will catch up on your paperwork, and you will get a bill from them, for every penny they paid on your behalf. They'll bring it through collections too - they have very aggressive collections. |

This is probably an oversight by your previous employer, or Aetna. Regardless, when they realize the error, they can go backwards and cancel the insurance when it was supposed to stop. They will take their money BACK for claims paid on your behalf. This means that any provider will then be owed by YOU for treating you. If you have prescriptions that you filled after the insurance should have stopped, you are responsible for that as well. The best case for you is that when the cancelation happens, it will not be for the Oct 15'ish date. |
