Grad. Student needs health insurance?
I will be quitting my full-time job to attend Grad school full-time in May. Unfortunately I will lose my health insurance covered by my employer. I really cannot go with out health insurance. I need affordable coverage. Any suggestions?

Find out whether or not the university you're attending has a student health plan. Generally, that's going to be the most affordable option for any full time student (who doesn't have coverage through their own or their parents' employer).

If you want "affordable" health insurance I would look into plans that have higher deductibles, no prescription drug coverage and no coverage for doctors office visits. This is based on the premise that you are young and healthy.

Why pay every month for a drug plan if you don't use prescription drugs? Why pay higher premiums to pay for a doctors visit when you see a doctor once a year or less?

I would suggest that you get a policy that is going to pay for the large unexpected hospital bill and, in effect, self insure the prescription drugs and doctors visit because you will be able to pay for those occasional expenses from what you save every month. That is the only way to make health insurance affordable.

If your employer is large enough that COBRA is made available be sure to exercise that option until your own individual coverage is in place. (Get ready for sticker shock when you see the monthly COBRA premium).

An independent agent can help you sort out your options and propose a plan that fits your needs and budget.

Best wishes.

Your university will probably offer its own insurance. In some states, it is required by law. At my university, for fall and spring semesters, it is $415, but it is a closed HMO.

You can get health insurance quotes from different agents in your area by filling out a quote form at http://www.myinsurancequotes.net. Make sure you are getting the best deal because prices vary alot from company to company.

you can go on the cobra health insurance by your employer which can be expensive, like 250 to 450 dollars per month depending on what kind of plan your employer has.,

or you could shop around for private insurance like through blue cross or maney other companies, If your in your later 20's it's like around 155 per month with a 500 dollar deductible and 80 percent coverage therafter.

However in order to qualify for this coverage,
1. you need to healthy.
2. 2, 1 or no doctor visits in the last two years.
3. have had no major health problems in the last FIVE years, cancer, heart, diabetes.

otherwise you will probabbly be denied.

Coverage isn't based on "affordable". It's expensive. If you're 25 & healthy, it WILL cost $300 a month, unless you want to take a monster deductible.

I'd strongly suggest picking up Cobra coverage through your employer.
