Group Health Insurance with Pregnancy?
I know I can’t get an exact answer without all the group details, I’m just looking for a general idea. I currently don’t have health insurance with work. They do offer it, however it is not open enrollment right now. My wife is two months pregnant and we just found out her health insurance doesn’t cover pregnancies. They are saying I can’t join the group with my wife and have the pregnancy covered. My understanding was that pregnancies could not be considered pre-existing conditions for group policies. Please help!!!

You can only add people to your group health plan at the beginning of the year and your original enrollment date, and if there are any family changes such as marriage or divorce.

The reason why you can't add her now isn't necessarily just because she's pregnant, it's because it is not an open enrollment period.

Depending on how far along she is you hopefully should be able to enroll her in your plan at the beginning of the year - just before the baby is born.

Or, if worst comes to worst, you can quit your job and find another employer that offers health benefits and enroll her then. OR...Sometimes employers are willing to "fire" and rehire you the same day-thereby making you eligible for new enrollment.

Good luck...and congrats!

From what I have know, in order to have a pregnancy covered, you must have the insurance in place before conception.

The problem is that you are not in an open enrollment time. If you were, you could add her and pregnancy is not considered pre-existing if it is part of a group plan for over 50 employees. Why didn't you get the health insurance when it was offered? Things like this do happen and that is what it is for.

I think that's going to depend on what state you are in. I've certainly seen pregnancies considered "pre-existing" on group policies.

More importantly - when is open enrollment for your company? Most of the time, it's end of the year - effective january 1st. If she's 2 months along now, it's a moot point, as the baby will be here by then.

Wow that sounds weird.. doesn't make sense to me...sounds like your company doesn't want to pay...but why not offer the plan to you and split the cost if cost is actually a factor...

If you cannot obtain coverage, you should consider Ameriplan. It's $59.95 per month for a family plan and although it's not "traditional" insurance, if you get stuck without any coverage at all, you will end up with a big bill, especially with pregnancy. Ameriplan has a great hospital advocacy plan which can save you thousands..

I would talk to your HR manager and get some more FACTS..
There is no way pregnancy can be considered a pre-existing condition, in my opinion...
