It's not based on what you can afford, it's based on the RISK.
If you have an old beater, 6 years old or older, and it's paid for, that's the CHEAPEST way to insure a car. It's still going to cost you PLENTY, but maybe only $2,000 a year instead of $10K.
From the rate you're quoting, I'm guessing that you either have a bad driving record, or you want a brand new car. In which case, you can't AFFORD a new car. So give it up, and buy a $500 junker, and just carry minimium coverage on it. And if it's the bad driving record, get a bus pass for the next 3 years, sorry, and wait until your driving record improves. |

try progressive- the prices are good for new drivers. also allstate is ok sometimes, alot of things matter- best is if you can have someone anyone- grandmother- aunt- even freind put you on a plan, by law a freind you live with is required to add you to a plan-have someone say you live with them. try online quotes along with agency quotes- sometimes they offer a MUCH cheaper rate online, i dont know why but you fall through the cracks and get a break. |

In my experience, try AAA or Safeco for your age group. Without knowing the State you are in it is tough to say for sure. They typically are the best but if you strike out there try Progressive. |

The answer from the 21+ year agent is a decent idea, but his comment about 'minimum coverage' is kinda scary. Minimum coverage might only save you a few bucks a month, but you're screwed if you cause a big accident .
Anyway, every insurance company has their own way of developing rates - so that means that NO ONE can tell you who will be cheapest for you. The only thing you can do is call around or go online and get rates. Prices can vary in to the thousands of dollars between companies.
And when you get a quote, make sure they tell you what COVERAGE you're getting... Insurance is sold in different levels of coverage, and one company might be quoting you with crap, while the other is quoting you with great coverage. And by the way, I'd like to thank you for being so responsible. There are plenty of people who don't bother, drive without it, and then hurt someone and can't pay up. Rock on!
