OH, NY will revoke your driver's license if you go more than 30 days. I believe they will charge you a fine, and you'll have to re-register the plates (you might have to turn them in). NY is really tough on this.

You see, as soon as the policy lapses, the insurance company notifies the DMV in NY electronically, and they revoke your registration plates. You'll be getting a letter in the mail shortly.

Having an accident is NOT a good reason to let your insurance lapse - if you have a temporary substitute vehicle - like a rental car - your insurance will cover that. Plus, you have the whole issue with your tags.

Get a policy TOMORROW. The agent you talk to should know what to do about your tags, BEFORE you get a ticket.

Replace the coverage. Notify the DMV about the reason for the lapse. Get a record from the body shop of the dates the car has been off the road. This is an excusable lapse, and even if all the DMV wants is some nominal amount per day for the lapse, don't be in such a hurry. Once you use the privilege of keeping your car registered by paying the penalty, there is a long period of time before you can do it again; you might need to use this privilege sometime in the future when it IS your fault that your insurance lapsed.

But don't lose any sleep over this, it's not that big of a deal.

The risk I see with the insurance side of it was you had a lapse in coverage. Most companies will put you in a high risk insurance program until you have continuous coverage for about 6 months. The High risk insurance is typical much more costly. It stinks when you don't have the vehicle to insure, but companies usually don't look at that factor.

I know that you have to carry insurance all the time in the State of New York. I am not sure of the penaties for DMV. But your Insurance Company will still bill you regardless, if u did not use the vehicle or did not renew your policy.. They will still bill you until you either return the plate to DMV or show proof that your have another carrier.

Unfortunately you will be penalized for letting your policy lapse in coverage. If you were to go back to the same company you were at, most likely your premiums will increase. It will be considered that you were not continuously insured and that does hurt continuous insurance discounts. Regardless of if the car was in the shop and able to drive or not - it should ALWAYS be insured.

Yes, they are not going to word it like that but unless you have insurance for 6-12 months with no lapse most of the larger companies will not touch you...with an exception of a few, one of them being Geico.com.....

You have actually caused yourself to fall into a higher rated category, thus costing more for insurance had you just kept your policy current.....Never ever let a policy lapse, even if for that reason if you know you are getting a new car soon.

Good luck
