HMO or PPO?
Okay I dont know if I should get an HMO or PPO. I am a 23 year old female with mild asthma. I dont take any prescriptions regularly except birth control (which is only to regulate my hormones). So how would I know which to choose HMO or PPO? I currently live in Nevada but travel to California several times a year, so if I get sick in California I need to make sure I am covered. I mainly want a doctor for my annual physical (regular and gyn physicals), and for whenever I get sick (typically usually like strep or sinus infections), since I work in child care.

Every company will cover for emergencies out of area. An HMO will give you much more coverage for outpatient services. You pay a copay for everything while the PPO only covers after the deductible except for a copay to talk to a doctor. All tests are subject to your deductible. An HMO will work fine.

By the way, the HSA plan is better suited for families. You can get a copay plan reasonable.

PPO. With an HMO it is harder or impossible to be covered when you travel to a place where the plan has no providers.

If you have a choice, carefully read the summary of benefits and coverage for both. With an HMO, you have to pick a "primary care provider" physician and first go to him/her for all medical needs. Only he/she can refer you to a specialist. With a PPO, you have a network of providers (both primary care and specialists) that you can see as long as you stay within the network.

If you travel to California often enough that seeing a doctor located in Nevada just wouldn't be feasible, I'd go PPO. I prefer PPO generally, but that's just me.

AZBlue
Firstly, I am an Arizona Blue Cross broker, and only represent Arizona residents. The following information came from the Blue Cross website mentioned below.
Anthem Blue Cross has many individual plans to choose from. As an example, a 23 year old female may obtain a PPO plan for $91-$192 a month. Here's a link to get an exact price, simply enter your zip code and age. http://www.anthem.com/home-visitors.html. You can apply online if you choose.
The HSA, (health savings account,) qualified plan covers annual physical/gynecological exams, and no deductible must be met. You can read about the HSA plans on their website. Personally, I would purchase the $91 a month HSA plan with a $5000 deductible. Put another $100 or so in your HSA account each month to pay for any office visits, etc. This is tax-free, and any money left in the account at the end of the year is yours of course, and can roll over to the next year, earning interest. The money is also an above the line tax deduction.
You will be covered for emergency services in any state while traveling. You also benefit by having access to the Blue Card network of hospitals and doctors throughout the country. Using a contracted provider while traveling will save you quite a bit of money, and chances are the provider will be contracted, as you are dealing with Blue Cross.
Though the $5000 deductible may seem scary, it is a smart move on your part to purchase this type of plan. You are healthy, just a little asthma. The chances of you going to the doctor often isn't great. You can pay for the birth control out of your HSA account. As a member of Blue Cross, you are protected by the, "Allowed Amounts," the pre-determined negotiated rates between Blue Cross and the providers. So, even though you have a high deductible, any care that you receive will be substantially less in price than full retail cost.
