LARGE MARGE | HUSBAND NEEDS MEDICAL ATTENTION, our insurance is in transition...any suggestions? |
I need to take my husband to Urgent Care this morning....he has had a leg injury that is unexplained, and back of calf has turned yellow. I am fearing a blood clot. I am in transistion of employment, and my insurance has lapsed. I carried our family insurance since it was a better deal than my husbands plan. We are now going back on his insurance, but are in the middle of paperwork, proof of my insurance ending to pick his back up. It's just a matter of a day's worth of red tape, but now this is Sunday, and I feel the need to take him to the Urgent Care facility. If he needs hospitalization, treatment, surgery, WE ARE NOT COVERED right at this particular moment, and our luck just seems to run like this. Is there anything anyone might be able to suggest, or are we just going to have to eat the big bucks not having any insurance at this time??? |

Whether or not there will be insurance coverage depends upon the effective date of the reinstatement of his health insurance.
If it's been less than 90 days since you lost your job and the insurance that came with it, you can continue that insurance with your COBRA benefits. That will be more expensive than what you were paying while you were working, but probably a lot less than the hospital bills.
Your employer is required by law to send you notification of your eligibility and the paperwork to continue your insurance. Even though you will probably not get that notification for a few days or even weeks after termination, the coverage will remain in effect retroactive to the date you left as long as you pay the premiums when due.
Regardless of the insurance coverage, his health comes first. Get the treatment now and sort out the insurance details later. |

Even though your insurance may have lapsed you may be within the time frame to sign up for COBRA. If that is the case you could still have coverage on your plan just at a higher premium. You normally have 30-60 days I think to sign up for COBRA |

Your insurance might be in the lapsed fase but if you pay up the balance due then you are still covered and preexisting conditions are still covered. If you send payment or talk on phone to insurance company tomorrow about reinstating insurance then DO NOT MENTION YOUR HUSBANDS CONDITION.Your only concern is to reinstate lapsed policy by paying up any amount due. |

No matter what take your husband to the hospital. I agree with the other answers health always comes before finances. Monday morning check with your husband's insurance some companies have a grace period where they will back date the start of coverage to start the day after your coverage lapsed. if not most public hospitals have programs to help asbsorb some if not all of the bill incurred. |

Go to Urgent Care now, worry about the financial later. Most hospitals have financial counselors to work with. |

Don't mess around with your health. Take him to the Doctor now & worry about the cost later.
If it's a blot clot do you think it isn't going to kill him if you just wait a few days? |

Bummer. If it were my hubby, I'd have him down at urgent care, and worry about the bill later.
You'll probably have to eat this one, and work out a payment plan or something. But a good husband is worth it. :D |
