There are two different kinds of disability riders on life insurance policies - one is called Waiver of Premium, where the insurance company pays the premium on the life insurance policy if certain conditions are met...this is the more common.
The other is an actual disability income rider attached to the life insurance policy - there are some companies who have this option, but only a small percentage. In these policies, the insurance company will reimburse for lost wages up to the maximum specified in the policy, again subject to certain conditions.
To collect on either, the insurance company will collect reports from your doctor and may well want a second opinion from another doctor.
I know many who have collected under both scenarios when the disability has met the definitions found in the policy.
If you think you qualify (or even if you are not sure), fill out a form with the company to start the process rolling. If you don't agree with the decision, you can always escalate to your state insurance department.

depends on what your disability is. If you by chance are on disability because you cut a finger, hand, leg or something off your insurance can give you a % worth of your part that was cut off. I learned that in a life insurance class I took. But please people dont go do that to get easy money either. But if you are disabled because you got hurt in any other way. Sorry to say no. that is why there is unemployment to collect.

Yes. You have to present your case to the insurance company. If they balk, either contact your state's insurance commissioner or a lawyer.
If you are truly eligible, the insurance company will quickly see the error of its ways.

Keep in mind that the disability rider on a life insurance policy is designed to pay the monthly premium of the policy while you have a disability. This is not a full blown disability insurance policy to replace your income.
