Have you saved up to weather 6 months of economic hardship? Like loss of employment.?

My husband and I only have about 3 months saved up if both of us just happened to lose our jobs at the same time.

If only one of us lost a job, then it would last 6 months.

I'm still working on saving the money to cover us both for 6 months.

I still live at home as a dependent, and although I work, there's no way I could have saved up enough to weather through 6 months of hardship if there ends up being a sharp downturn.

Yes, I lost my job about 5 months ago and thought I would run out of money by now. Looks like I will be able to stretch it for another 4 months before I think about tapping into my 401k (which may last me another 3 or 4 months based on todays stock market and saving some out for the tax penalty.. yikes)

No. I had 2 months saved and all my credit cards were paid off. The company I worked for downsized and I lost my job. I used up the savings and now am living on credit cards. Hopefully I will find another job before the cards are maxed out. Its hard to save when you are in debt. It made more sense to me to pay off credit cards that charge 12% instead of putting money into a savings that earns 3%.

A lot of financial experts say a person needs enough money to survive at least 2years of economic hardship. I don't think this financial crisis will last only 6 months.
I have found a site where a smart American gives out a lot of free advice and help on how we can not only survive this but make it work for us. Check this out:
