Yeah, You'll regret it more if you get sick and have to pay 10 times as much (not an exaggeration) for medical fees. Without insurance: a doctor's visit is around $200. Simple blood work costs around few hundred or maybe ever a thousand dollars, a visit to the ER can cost minimally 2-3 thousand dollars..plus if you get cavities a lot, you cant just avoid them and not get them filled because then you will end up losing your teeth or having to get them pulled.. |

~~At least look into major medical insurance. In other words, you can pick a plan with little to no doctor appointment , or medication coverage, for outpatient care. If you are hospitalized, then you would have coverage.
This way you won't have to declare bankruptcy if you have one major health problem (say appendix), but you would just have to cover your doctor's visit if you get a simple infection or something.
With this your age you should get a very reasonable rate. Look Blue Shield and Blue Cross for comparison. Best of luck!~~ |

I recently had a kidney stone and the total cost was around $6,200.
The only thing that actually helped me overcome the whole ordeal were the meds that were prescribed; they came to a total cost of $120.
Bottom line is if you do go to a hospital, be very aware of how much things can cost such as x-rays, cat scans, IVs and so on.
I had to get it all and it was overkill; I had textbook symptoms and only needed meds rather than getting billed for stuff I didn't even need. |

If you are in college, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be affordable for college students. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name in the search box. You might also be interested in joining the American College Student Association (ACSA), a national organization for college students. They have lots of member benefits, including student health insurance. Their membership fee is affordable. |
