Health Insurance change, what will happen?

I had a short term (6 months) personal health insurance previously, now I found a new job and I had a new insurance. My question is I was hospitalized last year and my old insurance policy is still processing it with the hospital and the hospital bill cost around $36k. Does my old insurance is still liable for this or my new insurance will handle it?

Health insurance goes by the date of service.

If your hospitalization occurred while your short term policy was in effect, then that's the policy that would be responsible for the services.

Your current insurance through your employer is only responsible for services that you had from the date the policy began through whatever date your policy ends.

What determines who is responsible for paying for medical care is the date of service. Whatever carrier you were effective with had when you received the services is the carrier that is responsible.

The old carrier, once you terminate coverage will not cover any future bills, regardless of when you were originally diagnosed and treated for the condition.

The claim is handled by the policy in force at the time of treatment. Any subsequent treatment may be handled by your new coverage, but could still be technically assigned to the policy in force when you had the first occurence of the ailment.

Your old insurance. Hospital bills are covered by whichever insurance you had on the day of treatment. It does not matter whether you still have that insurance when the processing of the bill is complete.
