Health Insurance for getting pregnant?
I'm thinking of getting pregnant, can anyone tell me what is a good insurance that would cover most of the bills I would have with dr. visits, delivery, etc. I can't afford to pay a lot.
Additional Details
I am self-employed (in PA) so I can't get insurance through an employer. I'm not planning to get pregnant right now, maybe sometime this year.

The answerers who have said WAIT are correct.

You will need to make sure you request maternity coverage when you obtain insurance quotes. Maternity is not covered under a standard plan.

Then, wait. All insurance companies have a probationary period. For standard insurance, this is 3 months. During the probationary period, you do not want to do ANYTHING that will make the insurance company think you intentionally took out insurance to cover something you had in mind to do. If you do, you will be dropped, or your rates will absolutely sky-rocket.

Unfortunately, with individual insurance, your rates will rise dramatically after your pregnant, as your insurance company has to start dishing OUT more money than you're putting IN....that's how they work...

If you include maternity coverage, yes, you will need to wait at least 9 months before becoming pregnant. Sorry.

A re-pricing plan is not a good strategy. That will get you 1/3 off your hospital bill. When the average hospital maternity bill is $15,000 or more, having to shell out $10,000 is not a great plan. And that doesn't include doctor's visits...

Please check into OB/GYN clinics provided by medical schools. They are typically lower in price than doctors in private practices.

For more information, and to obtain insurance quotes, please see: http://www.health-insurance-low-cost.net/Insurance-Plans.htm.

Best Wishes.

Try a local agent. They should give you some great information.

For free health insurance quotes, and to connect with a local agent who can help you through this, fill out a quote form at http://www.myinsurancequotes.net.

Also, something unique that is available in some states around me (Utah) are supplemental health plans. Conseco, AFLAC, and some other companies offer them. They are also referred to as hospital indemnity plans. They would possibly help you pay for most if not ALL of the charges. This is something a local agent can help you with as well.

Thanks!

where makes all the difference.

insurance offers are different by state/province/country.

try google -- type in your location and health insurance -- they'll find plenty of links to insurance outfits.

there is, of course, no such thing as a free lunch and the insurance companies have all seen your people who try to get insurance the year before becoming pregnant. look out for three year exclusion clauses in policies offered.

***
alternate idea -- get a job in a government agency or office, or in a unionized company. their insurance may cover you for all causes effective immediately.

One through your employer. MOST individual health insurance policies don't offer maternity benefits (but if you're 25 and healthy, it's GOING to cost $300 a month).

The ones that do offer maternity, you have to have it in place about nine months BEFORE you get pregnant.

You can't place the bet after the race is run. So get the coverage in place now, and be able to wait a year before getting pregnant.

I agree with not letting them know your going to get pregnant! Also if you cannot afford insurance you could check out a medical discount plan. They are only about $30 a month and help you with all your medical expenses. We use Ameriplan, www.betterbenefits.info

Do your research by searching their sites and DO NOT TELL THE COMPANY you're intending to get pregnant, they'll use that as an excuse to deny you.
