The wisest thing you can do is contact an Independant Agent in your area. He will be able to show you policies with the benefits and premiums that best meet your son's needs. He will also be able to explain the differences and covered benefits of each so that you can make an informed decision. |

do you guys have blue cross/blue shield out there? if so, ck with them. i live in TN and i know several people that have dropped their insurance they get through their employees to go with blue cross/blue shield. |

This one is easy. Inexpensive plans are available from HealthNet, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, as well as Kaiser.
To keep the costs down, I recommend a higher deductible plan, however many plans are available that cover preventive and child health visits to age 2 with no deductible. Contact a benefits specialist, because there are many plans with lots of good features that can get missed if you just buy on-line.
No joke, they are pretty complicated, so don't just buy a Blue Cross plan from the first person who offers you one. There are lots of good companies and plans that will provide great benefits for you for about $80 a month, or maybe less.

I suggest seeking information from a nurse case manager at your local hospital or family services. Also, try notifying your attorney general's office and ask if any plans exist in your state.
Be care what insurance you pick. Some have fine print that actually make eligiblity for reimbursement non-esistant. The plan the salesman tells you about may not be what you get.
If your son already needs health care, take to the hospital and let a nurse case manager get involved that way.
Another option, if your son has a specific disorder, is to seek national, state and local support services that special in that disorder.
Lastly, I worked for an organiztion that did not offer health insurance. I researched plans and asked if they would offer it to other emplyees to get a discount rate and the employees paid the full premiums, but was deducted from our paycheck before taxes. The may even put you in a lower income tax bracket that will indirectly save you money (any cover the cost of the insurance). Eventually my organiztion paid for the benefit entirely. |

Since you have already told me you don't qualify for the state programs I would recommend you go to an online service like http://www.lvhealthins.com that gives you competative quotes with 20 or 30 companies at once. You also want to make sure that what you are getting is major medical. If it is not major medical then it will have some things missing that are covered by major medical. The internet is great place to quote and purchase health insurance. They were great in helping me. They listened to my problems and helped me address them. |
