daisy_crazy32 | Health Insurance for the self-employed? |
After 13 years with my husband, he is leaving me. I have always been on his health plan because I am self-employed. Can anyone offer me any advice on where to find providers? I have no idea where to start. |

Health insurance for the self employed has always been a concern because of its high cost
I suggest you start with the National Association for the Self Employed http://www.nase.org/ . NASE offers affordable group health plan for its members http://benefits.nase.org/benefits.asp?cat=2 -- compare their plans to the rate that you can get in other insurance companies from Kaiser to BlueCross Blueshield |

mbrcatz17 is exactly right but be careful when looking at "affordable group plans" for the self-employed. Many of those plans have daily limits. For example, they'll only pay $400 or so per day if you go into the hospital. Also the deductible is per occurrence, not per year. So if you have 3 accidents or illnesses in a year you pay the deductible each time. On a regular "traditional" health plan you have just one deductible. They also have very restrictive limits on how much they pay for many other procedures. |

Find a local agent, there are many underwriters out there, if you need a listing of companies that do business in your state, your states Department of Insurance will maintain a listing. |

Go to the guy who sells your car insurance. Ask him if he does health insurance. Your local, independent agent should be able to get a private policy for you, AND they'll know who's got the best product, and the best price, in your area.
Not every company has providers in every area. DO NOT buy over the internet - you're likely to get scammed. And keep in mind, a "health discount plan" (I'm sure you'll get offers via this question) is NOT insurance, and even though they claim most providers take it, they don't. |

You may want to try a website that compares multiple companies at once to get you the best price. I am paying less than ½ after I did.
Go to: http://www.insureme.com/landing.aspx?Refby=616163&Type=health
Take care,
