Health Insurance is Way Too Expensive?
I currently have BCBS through my job. I cannot afford to have that deducted from my check and my boss is not giving out any raises. What to do? Is it a good idea to cancel? I have done some figuring and I can pay cheaper on my own than to have that taken out of my check.

You will loose the tax advantages of having it trough your employer and having it through your employer also guarantees coverage. It is not unusual for insurance companies to have very low first year rates and then really jack them up the second year and every year there after.

Be aware that you will likely see reduced benefits, however if the situation works for you then more power to you. Get a copy of your policy and sit down with a local independent agent. Have him or her go line by line with you to see which coverage is important to keep and which is not important to you. If you feel you can go with the reduced coverage, then take the lower rate. Also, ask how long your rate is guaranteed. It can be as little as 3 months and as long as 2 years so this is important.

You have to wait until open enrollment, to drop the coverage. But it's pretty common, for the young, healthy people to be able to get private coverage, cheaper, than the group plan. No maternity benefits any more, though.

More often than not a group policy is more expensive than an individual policy, especially if it is a smaller group. Many people don't realize this because the employer often pays a percentage of the premium. Visit a local agent that works with all of the major companies in your area. You'll want to make sure with the individual policy you do not give up benefits that you need. The agent can explain what you get and, more importantly, what you don't get with the policy and can compare the individual policies with the group policy. Also, if you have pre-existing conditions you'll want to make sure you are covered for those conditions. The agent can help you there as well. There is no extra charge using an agent.

Be aware that you can only drop off of a group plan during open enrollment so it may be awhile before you can change.

While you may be able to pay less on your own, you are not going to get the same coverage as you could through a group plan. The only way to opt-out is to have coverage in force elsewhere, but it can be done.

I see some people are saying you can't drop until open enrollment. This is true if you were going to drop all together, but if you can show proof of medical coverage somewhere else, you should be able to drop it....just show your employer a letter proving you are covered with another insurance....
