bluesky9 | Health Insurance question....can an agent answer this? |
I'm shopping around for health insurance and a question that is asked is about being a smoker. I quit almost 4 months ago. Some only ask, "Do you smoke tobacco...yes or no", others ask, "have you smoked in the past year." I have smoked in the past year.....even though I quit. This is tricky......it's easy to mark yes or no when asked, "Do you smoke", but have you smoked in the past year??? Uggggh. Someone please advise. Will answering that I have smoked raise my rates?? Thanks. |

I can understand your frustration. No one wants to be turned down for health insurance or made to pay more for coverage because of an unhealthy habit in the past that’s no longer an issue. But really you need to answer these kinds of questions as truthfully as possible.
One bit of advice – talk to a licensed agent who represents multiple health insurance companies in your area. It doesn’t cost anything extra to work through an agent. A good agent can tell you how the different health insurance companies in your area tend to look on the issue of past smoking and which ones are more or less likely to charge you extra for coverage based on a past habit like this. You may be able to find a licensed agent in your area through the phone book. Or, you can call one of the agents at eHealthInsurance.com, where I work. We’re licensed in all 50 states plus DC and have a deep knowledge of the different health insurance companies we represent. The number is 1-800-977-8860. We’d be glad to help.
Good luck,
Amir M, licensed agent |

You need to answer the questions truthfully. If you have smoked within the past year, then yes, you are a smoker.
Most companies will automatically rate you up. One exception is Aetna. They do not automatically rate up for smoking. You can view their health insurance plans and others here:

Yes, being a tobacco user generally raises the rates by about %20. After you have been tobacco free for one year you can request that the insurance company reduce your rates to that of a non tobacco user. Some carriers will do this.
Don't lie on the application. If you do the insurance company can legally rescind your policy when you have a claim.

PS: Aetna didn't used to rate up smokers, but just recently began doing so, in my state anyway. |

Yes it will raise your rates, but don't lie. If they find out (and they will), it will be a disaster! |

it will raise your rates, and could invalidate insurance if they find out you have lied, however unless you have a *** in your hand when you go seee them, i think you could be a little untruthful |

Smoking can raise your rates.
But be honest, because if the insurance company finds out you lied, it can void all your coverage. It's no good getting a policy with cheaper rates, if you, for example, attack, and the insurance denies your bypass and open heart surgeries because you lied about smoking on the application. |

Just say no, then they can't give you a higher price. |
