Salami and Orange Juice | Health coverage HIPAA question.? |
I'm on COBRA now and will have to switch to an individual plan when my COBRA runs out.
I have a pre-existing condition.
I will have had more than 18 months of continuous coverage.
From what I understand, because I met the above criteria, an insurer cannot deny or limit coverage due to my pre-existing condition. Right?
But can they hike up my rates due to the condition?
Thanks in advance. |

Oh, yes. And if you are on COBRA, that means that you are probably not employed, which means that you probably cannot afford the higher rates. When an insurer is forced by HIPAA to let someone have a policy, they usually charge over $1000 per month. |

Well, you can't just go to ANY insurer for a HIPAA policy. So you probably want to talk to a local broker, who can help you get quotes.
And yes, they can - and will - jack up the price to cover the preexisting condition. A friend of mine pays $2500 a month - but she's got cancer. |
