enamelcutter | Health insurance after spouse death.? |
My wife and I each have individual HDHP. When we have children and add them to one of our plans, what would happen if that individual died and the child in the meantime had developed a disease or condition that is uninsurable. The safest method would be to insure children on both plans, although that is also the most expensive. The cheapest would be to drop one plan and have everyone on a single plan. Can you name both parents as primary so that if one dies the whole family keeps the policy or does there have to be one single primary? My wife and I both own a small business and can do whatever we like when purchasing insurance. |

You have two options. You and your wife could both get on one family HDHP. If you get on the right plan the deductible is per family, not per person. When you have children you could just add them to that plan. Your other option would be to put the kids on a plan of their own. Most companies have children only plans. "Traditional" copay plans are usually better for younger children because most children have several doctor visits each year. If your HDHP is HSA qualified you can open a health savings account and will be able to pay the childrens' doctor visits from that account. |

The easiest way is to do a group plan for the business and both of you will be employees.
And if you are in a state that has a high risk pool, you can get the kids on the that if necessary.
Or make sure you have enough life insurance so that its not a problem. |

If the child is covered under both plans, one would have to be designated as primary payer and the other as secondary. But if the primary policy later lapses (for whatever reason), the child is already covered under the secondary plan which would then become the sole and primary coverage. |

If the children are covered under only one plan and that parent dies, that is considered a life event and they would be able to be added to the other policy (unless there's a rider in the plan that denies that). If you cover them under both, most policies follow the birthday rule--if your birthday is in May and your wife's is in July, you would be considered primary, regardless of year of birth.
If you're writing an individual policy (not a group policy), just check with the company and see what the effect would be if the primary insured died. Since it's an individual policy, there should be no issue with rolling it to the surviving spouse. |

You can't be insured on both plans I believe. There are no conditions that I know of that are uninsurable. If you had a plan with a company and then you died, your spouse and child would most likely be able to keep the plan (my mother died when I was in high school and my dad and I kept the plan until I graduated college). |
