Hi, I'm hoping someone who works in the health insurance industry can help me out with this. I just applied for Blue Shield health insurance, and I got a call stating that my application has been put on hold because they'd like more detailed information from my previous physicians. I'm a recent college graduate and generally healthy. I've had nothing wrong with me except for an allergic food reaction, some minor problems with acne (including a small facial cyst I got removed), and one abnormal pap smear result, that was followed up later with a normal result. Plus I'm on birth control. Would any of these issues provide grounds for decline? I'm especially inquiring about my women's health history because my insurance info and application results get mailed to my parents house, and I'd really rather they not know I'm on BC, and that I get pap smears--even though nothing's actually wrong with me. Thanks for your time, I appreciate it. |

~~No doubt about it. It is because of the abnormal pap smear. They will get further records from you doctors. Once satisfied it was just an erroneous reading, and you have no further problems to worry about, they will approve you.~~ |

Since your application is on hold rather than actually declined, I would tend to believe that your abnormal pap is the part causing the concern. Why is your insurance information going through your parents home? are you living with them? Once your physician provides a more detailed history BCBS will make their final determination about your policy. |

Sometimes, if youve had follow up Dr.visits, they arent recorded on your medical history, so you need to find out the reason to the hold.
It could be the cyst issue or your abnormal papsmear.
Call them and get details, and have your DR follow up w the new results. That will take care of it. |

Birth control is no reason for them to deny you of the coverage, but it might be why it is on hold. When you are on birth control they have to discuss things with your doctor and get a written statement from them saying that you are either on the birth control to prevent pregnancy, or you are on it because of doctors orders for health reasons like regulating your cycle. they do this because they will NOT pay for it if it is to prevent pregnancy, but if it is because of health reasons they will, but they want to know this before approving your coverage, because once you have the insurance and you go to get a refill, if they deny you because they havent approved your birth control yet, it is a LONG LONG LONG process trying to get a refound. Trust me i went through it, and still never got half my money back from them! |

Well, it's probably going to be that abnormal pap. Anything that's currently undiagnosed, is going to red flag your application.
BUT, your agent, if you're doing this through an agent, should be able to tell you the EXACT reason for the declination. Or the carrier will.
And, there's nothing wrong with your parent's knowing that you get pap smears, it's NORMAL preventative healthcare, that should be done every year, or every other year, as soon as you hit menses. |
