Health insurance at work?
I am changing jobs. I am curious if I am still covered with my health care insurance for 30 days after I leave? Not sure why I think this. May have heard it somewhere. thanks

Not all employers cover you for 30 days. Some terminate coverage when you terminate the employer. Some cover you until the end of the month you left. You will need to ask your current employer about this. When will you be eligible for coverage through your new employer? Find out what the costs are for COBRA and weigh that against the possiblility of needing coverage and not having it. Remember, once you are past the election period for COBRA, you can't go back.

No, you will not likely be covered for a full 30 days after you leave.

There are generally 2 options that an employer selects when they establish a policy - for an employee's coverage to end as of the last day of employment, or for an employee's coverage to end on the last day of the month when they leave their job.

Your insurance policy (summary plan document, certificate of coverage - whatever your official policy document is labeled as) will spell out which option applies to you. Look in the section that details termination of coverage. It will clearly state that either you'll be canceled on your last day or you'll be canceled at the end of the month.

(You should also be able to ask your HR/benefits rep, but if you're not yet comfortable telling people you're planning to quit then look it up in your policy.)

So, you think you will get sick within 30 days after you leave your job? Dont waste your money to the greedy insurance knowing that you will leave your job in 30 days.

Curious_One
you should be. they cant just cut you off without you knowing about it. talk to your personnel director before you switch to make sure it's carried thru.

you probablly are.

Now mom of 3
yes you are covered for 30 days, and you can request cobra for a longer period of time, but cobra can be very expensive. your new ins w. the new job, usually doesn't start for 90 days. so you may go w/o ins for 60 days. so try your best to stay healthy and accident free!
