Amanda K | Health insurance problem: not a full-time college student. Help me? |
I am currently a part-time college student (only 9 credit unit) and happily taking my courses. In the middle of my semester, my dad suddenly called me that he needed a transcript to show proof that I'm a full-time student in order to stay in his health insurance. I'm currently freaking out here because generally, I'm not a full-time student and my college doesn't have a late enrollment class. Overall, my questions are:
Since I'm not a full-time student, will I be kicked out of the insurance under my dad's name forever? If not, can I ever get back in the insurance by being a full-time student next semester? Is there any other way out of this? What transcript do I need to send: Official or Unofficial?
Sadly, I don't know the name of the health insurance. I think it's Pacificare. Something like that. |

As soon as you are eligible for reinstatement under your father's healthcare (meaning, you are taking 12 units), you can have your father reapply for you.
You can do so up to age 23 in most cases. |

You should be able to be re-added to the policy once you are a full-time student again. (As long as you don't become too old to stay on the policy as a full-time student.)
If you aren't a full time student right now, it doesn't really matter if you send a transcript or not at this point - your dad can inform the insurance company that you aren't currently a full time student, and you'll be removed from the policy for the time being.
Each insurer has their own rules on whether they require an official or unofficial transcript...you'll want to find out what your insurance company requires, once you enroll full time again.
For future reference, its important to remember that if you plan to/need to remain on your dad's insurance policy, its important that you enroll full time each and every semester. As you've now learned, the insurance company can ask for verification of your student status. (They generally do this once a year...although they are entitled to ask for a re-verification at any point during the year too.) |

The college typically has proof of enrollment forms that they send to the insurance company. The transcript shows PREVIOUS enrollment, not current enrollment. Go to the Registrar's Office and tell them you need proof of enrollment for insurance, it's common, they'll know what to give you. You can get back on once you're enrolled full-time and stay on for one whole year, and then you have to provide proof of enrollment again. The only alternative is him calling the insurance company and asking for an extension until the next semester. |

What state are you in? And your dad's employer? Some states have moved to allowing coverage for anyone to age 25, regardless of student status.
If you are kicked off, you should be able to get back on in January (the new semester) |

Health insurance generally does not cover children over age 19 unless they are full time students. If you are young enough to be covered without being a full-time student, they would not have asked for a transcript. Therefore, I conclude that you are too old to be covered by his health insurance without being a full time student.
If you again become a full time student, you should be able to resume coverage at that time. However, if you were not covered for more than approximately 62 days, then any conditions that are preexisting at the time that coverage resumes will not be covered. You can prevent this by obtaining other health insurance, temporarily, so that you are not without health insurance for more than 2 months at a time. |

Hopefully you will be able to work it out and you will be able to keep the insurance! If not I know a very affordable alternative! |

You can be added during the next semester, as long as you return to full-time status. If there is longer than a 63 day break in coverage, you'll have to provide information for a pre-x investigation, since you will lose your creditable coverage, so it may be worth your while to pick up COBRA. |

If you are in college and end up losing your parent's coverage, you may want to check out health insurance programs that are written through your school. United Healthcare has a plan available at many US schools. These student injury and illness plans provide wide ranging coverage and are designed to be more affordable than an individual policy. To check if your school is participating, go to www.UHCSR.com and enter your school name at the prompt. Even if your school is not contracted with United Healthcare, you may become eligible by joining the ACSA (American College Student Association) for a minimal fee, and take advantage of the plan that covers college students across the US. If you don't find your school listed, type in ACSA and view the benefits available to their members. |
