Jamie H | Heater burned hole in carpet can i claim insurance? |
So i am in a rented property and i used the landlords electric portable heater one night, placed in on the carpet, the element in the heater must have fallen to the bottom, its a really flimsy design and ended up buring a hole, i didn't really smell it was quite slow burning, maybe 15cm x 8cm in the carpet.....
I panicked and cut the hole out thinking i could patch it up with a matching piece of carpet but i can't get the edges to blend in, bizarre you might think but i panicked a bit and wasn't thinking too clear, it is an old carpet anyway.
So i have home insurance and it's just a general one i think accidents are covered. What do you think? Additional Details The only problem is that i will not land my landlord in it for having a bad heater, they have been good to me so that is out of the question. . |

Home insurance covers lots of different things. I'm not familiar with all the fine print of my home policy, but my home insurance agent is always helpful. Try calling your agent or a agent in your town. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-Insurance.html They should be able to assist you. |

We are talking about insurance in the UK right?
As a tenant your household policy that you arranged will cover your own personal contents - I bet the carpet belongs to the landlord? If you do happen to own it youself then it WOULD be covered provided you opted for accidental damage cover (as there was no actual ignition to flame). So a sucessful claim on your own policy is, I think, unlikely.
The landlord will have the buildings insured. Buildings cover usually includes things that would be left if the premises were sold e.g. fitted carpets (not loose rugs). So - maybe the landlord could claim but again the claim will only succeed if he has chosen accidental damage cover and landlords (usually being cheapskates) tend not to.
This leaves the fact that the landlord supplied you with a defective fire which would almost certainly put the onus on him to deal with the damage provided you hadn't modified or abused the fire in some way. The trouble is that you've cut a hole in the carpet which, frankly, wasn't the best thing to do.
I think you should tell the landlord what happened - apologise for the "knee jerk" response of carpet cutting but point out that his defective fire caused the actual damage. A sensible approach, if you can afford it, is to make a reasonable offer to contribute. The landlord will have a newer carpet which will still be there when you quit the premises - suggest 15% of the cost as a start point.
Good luck. |

i would say no, if you had taken a picture of what had happend and called your insurance and say i have evidence it was caused the way you described. But you have cut holes etc |

i wouldn't think it is worth it...you'll probably pay an excess on the policy anyway....save your claiming for a real emergency.
i would say though...you are very lucky that didn't happen during the night & cause more damage....very dangerous...speak to the landlord! |

Very simple, check your insurance policy. |

Do not put in a claim on your insurance. Your deductible may be more than the cost of replacing the carpet.
Either cover up the hole with a small little carpet on top of it or a table or something else.
Only other option is for you to pay for the whole carpet. |

if you have accidental damage you can claim. But the property is rented and the landlord reaps benefit from this, have you tried speaking to the landlord. will he replace it? |
|

ANF

Contact your insurers and tell them what happened. Forget about the patching up attempt. They will then pursue your landlord for providing a faulty and dangerous heater. |
