Your wife -- it depends on your income, but she probably won't qualify. Your children may be able to fall under a state program (CHIP -- Children's health insurance program) A lot of people in Texas use this. However, they aren't necessarily the expensive part -- your wife probably is.
Health insurance is expensive. You probably have a pretty good deal -- I pay around that for employee+spouse. The other option is if your wife can get a job with an employer sponsored plan. :) Also, you may be able to look at the level of coverage. My employer offers an HMO and a PPO plan. the HMO is much less. Some also have the option of a higher deductable for a lower premium (althought I wouldn't do this with kids -- you'll pay it anyway on illness). |

$400 a month for family coverage? That's REALLY good! I pay that just for ME. (My parents pay $675 a month for the two of them.)
Your wife might not be able to use the welfare insurance - that's usually for people who can not get insurance any other way... |

How would your wife qualify for welfare if you are working?
The only thing I can suggest in addition to the other answers is looking into "catastrophic care" policies which mostly cover major events (cancer, auto accident, etc.). However with two kids they need more than that. $400 for a family of four sounds about right, and that's a LOT of money every month. I don't see how families on a modest budget do it.
Unfortunately this is a growing problem nation-wide and it will continue to get worse. Health care and housing are becoming less affordable for working stiffs.
good luck |

This will definitely help you with bills later on. All ongoing medical problems are accepted. No waiting period. It's a discount benefits program called Ameriplan Health and it includes Medical care plus Dental, Vision, Prescription & Chiropractic all for less than $50 for individual or less than $60 for entire household. |

you don't have to enroll your family, can get single coverage for yourself cheaper but don't know if family would qualify for any of the govt insurance if eligible for private |

Well, medicaid (welfare insurance) is based on household income, so it's possible, but it's ALSO possible you won't qualify for it.
HOWEVER. Every state has a CHILDREN'S health insurance program (search your state, CHIP) which has low cost or free health insurance for lower income families. It might be that your kids will qualify for the chips program, and you can just do work insurance for you and your wife instead of the whole family. |

Have you considered a discount health benefit plan? The most expensive one is $59.95 per month for the ENTIRE household. A lot of times it can be used in addition to health insurance but it also functions well on it's own. Go to:

I hope this helps! |
