Jaime Leah | Help! Im only 18 and my insurance wont pay for an epidural?!? |
I dont know what I am going to do..I am only 18 and I am about 8 weeks pregnant and I just found out that my insurance (CDPHP through Medicaid) wont cover and epidural ..only if the doctor deems it "Medically Necessary" ..which means (and I asked) that they wont just give it to me for pain. I'm not sure where to go from here..Im in school and dont work full time and therefore cant get insurance through my job and my grandmother said that even if i were to get a different insurance that they wont cover a "pre-exisiting condition",and I that I would of had to have insurance for 10 months prior to getting pregnant? My grandmother also is begging me to get an abortion and I think maybe she is saying this on purpose? Please help! |

I don't know why your grandmother wants you to kill your baby, but I CAN tell you, most doctors WILL say it's medically necessary, under quite a few conditions.
I can ALSO tell you, childbirth is EASIER with a faster recovery, if you DON'T have the epidural. Honestly, women have been having babies for hundreds of years (LOL, sarcasm there) and epidurals have only been around for about 40 of them. You CAN have a baby without one. This is what being a sexually active woman is all about - having babies, living with the consequences of your actions.
Heck, a lot of times, the baby comes so fast, there isn't TIME to get an epidural.
You need to talk to your ob, and ask him WHEN it's medically necessary. Most of them say, "when the mother wants pain relief". |

If you want the epidural, pay for it yourself and have the insurance pay the other bills. Just because insurance does not pay for something does not mean that you cannot get it. |

first you need to talk to your HR personnell and get the specifics of what they will and will not cover. Not all insurances consider pregnancy a pre-existing condition and will cover the expense. If worst comes to worst, there will be no epidural, I have had 3 kids and only an epidural with my last. My first 2 babies were all natural, no nothing for pain. (and I was 17 when I had my first) you will live through that. Your grandmother does sound as though she is using the insurance as a reason to talk you into an abortion. Try to talk with her and get her to understand whatever decision it is that you have made. Good Luck!! |

Do you have a doctor? That is the person you should discuss that with. |

It is true that and insurance company won't cover the epidural due to "pre-existing". In any state the waiting period is 10 mos to 1 year for pregnancy. Have you tried any state sponsored programs that help teen expecting mothers in your situation. Log on the health department website in your state to see if there are any programs available to you. |
