we want to claim on our home insurance but have never done so before, what is the best thing to say and will they come out personaly to check we are telling the truth?
also how often should we claim to ensure we are getting our moneys worth.

The reason you have home insurance is not to "claim to get your moneys worth"!! You have homeowners insurance to protect your investment in case of a total loss, where you would lose you entire house!! You pay to have the protection and peace of mind.
Whenever you have a case to claim for, you have to call the claims department of the insurance company, and always tell the whole truth. If you try to claim for something that doesnt have to do with the actual damage, or try to get money out of it, then its called insurance fraud and is a felony.
Once you have filed the claim, an adjuster will be sent to view the damage or loss, and collect more info. The adjuster will then determine what the payout is based on the information provided.
Claims processes are very thoroughly examined these days due to so much past insurance frauds, that if the insurance company even has the slightest hunch that they are being tricked, they will investigate you and getting recorded statements. Its a tough business, but done for fairness sake.

You sound as if you want to cheat the insurance company. Be warned they have lie detector software now on their phones. You could end up being blacklisted as they all contribute to a possibly "dodgy" people database! |

Will they come out to check that you are telling the truth? Absolutely yes, whether it is a company employee (claims adjuster) or an independent appraiser, the damages must be confirmed. They will take pictures to verify the damages and look at it to make sure that the damage is consistent with what you claim happened as well as make sure it looks fresh and real (I have taken classes to be able to tell if "hail damage" is real or not, faking it is obvious once you know what to look for). Now for the other side. If you have a legit claim, there is no magic words to say, just be honest with what happened. As has been said in other answers, frequency is a red flag for anything other than acts of nature and can get your policy canceled. |
