discostu | High risk occupations?? |
What is the highest and lowest risk occupation band for insurance purposes??
I've heard that engineers are lowest and journalists are the highest, this can't be true?????? Additional Details this question is aimed at car insurance in the UK |

Depends what class of insurance you're looking at. A journalist will be a higher risk occupation for a professional indemnity policy but someone who works on an oil rig will be riskier for an employer's liability policy and someone who welds at an airport or carries out bus driving will be high risk for a public liability policy.
What class are you looking at? By your question it seems like a professional indemnity.
(Sorry, just looked at the additional bit. Car insurance will be higher for a journalist... think of paparazzi and all that chasing of celebs/news etc and the higher likelihood of writing your car off, crashing or having it vandalised by upset people they've reported about.) |

There is no such thing as a highest and lowest risk occupation band for insurance purposes. There is no industry standard and each insurance company is different and assesses risk differently. Some trades are riskier than others but every insurance company views risks differently. There may be some commonality among insurers regarding certain risks (trades) - there is however no such thing as a highest and lowest risk occupation band for insurance purposes as an industry standard. |

The highest risk occupation in the U.S. is actually President of the U.S., because 1 in every 11 is shot to death, but they do not include that as a separate occupation in the insurance statistics because the sample is not large enough.
There was a study that found that crab fishing off the coast of Alaska (watch the TV show "Deadliest Catch" on the Discovery Channel) was the most dangerous job in the United States. |

Are you talking HEALTH insurance? Workers comp? Liability??
The question is WAY too broad. Engineers aren't lowest in ANY of those categories, and journalists are lowest for Workers Comp. |
