This enquiry relates to the UK.

Standard household policies in th UK are on a 'New for Old' basis & cover for accidental damge to televisions subject to any exlcusions that may or may not apply- as detailed by Welcome News above.

The usual 'no claims discount' on UK policies is 10-20% so unless you have a very high premium it is unlikely to have a huge effect on your premium- you can find this information out from your policy booklet or just ask the insurer.

Depending on your insurer they will first try and fix it. If it's aggreed that the TV was broken beyond compare then it would either be replaced with a new one (Nearest model if yours is no longer available to buy) or you will be given the value in vouchers to spend in a shop. We have claimed for lots of things on home insurance due to 2 (!!) burglars and an unfortunate accident with a candle and new carpet! :( They have to ask lots of questions to check for inconsitancies in your story... there are a lot of fraudsters out there. Good luck!

most standard policies give accidental damage cover on t.v.'s , audio equipment, glass, mirror and bathroom fittings (you don't need to have upgraded to AD cover and it doesn't matter if you were moving it to clean it - it was still an accident!) If it can't be repaired or is not cost effective to repair you'll get an equivalent replacement (some insurers have their own providers cos that can keep their costs down)

Accidental damge to televisions IS normally covered under a house contents policy - subject to the excess on the policy - typically £50 if through a broker or £100 if buying direct.

BUT

Many policies have an exclusion "Damage caused in the process of cleaning, maintenance, repair or dismantling"

I suggest you read your policy or have a word with your insurance broker - assuming you are sensible and have one.

accidental damage option. if you have this it should be covered.

I dropped mine downstairs moving it out of the way so it would be safe during redecorating. had to take it for an independant assessment of the damage, but I added that cost onto the claim.

In the USA policies do not cover accidental damages. They are for acts of nature, I.e. fire, theft etc. Also polices have deductibles and the chance of your TV being more than your deductible are not high.

After determining if it was a covered peril, the next issue deals with how the policy is written and whether it is actual cash value vs. replacement cost.

ACV will only pay you the amount it is worth today minus any deductible on your policy. Ex: You bought the TV - 5 years ago for $900. Today the TV is used and you might be able to sell it for $150. The company would take the $150 and subtract the deductible and then pay you any difference.

Replacement cost is "new for old" and they would give you the cost of replacing the TV with a like kind and quality TV minus the deductible.

Caution should be used though as companies view small claims as a nuisance, and having silly small claims cam make your rates go up dramatically at renewal, and often the company will non-renew you. Use your policy to cover disaster situations only if possible.

Breaking/dropping your television is not a covered peril. Sorry!
