Andypandy | Home insurance ? Help please I am hoping to successfully claim for my carpet which has been ruined by pets |
Being locked into the lounge in my absence. I cannot afford to replace the carpets due to redundancy last year. Still trying to find a job. I hear they always try to avoid paying out. So any advice on claiming effectively most gratefully recieved |

they don't always avoid paying out, but the reason has to be credible, valid. Who locked the animals in the room to start with, a neighbour, friend, partner? Because insurers will want to know. Because if they caused the problems its unlikely they will pay out. |

Most policies have standard exclusions, things for which you are not covered...
Damage caused to your possessions because your house has not been kept in a good state of repair
Costs of routine wear and tear
Smoke damage
Damage caused by pets

Contents insurance usually covers you for accidental damage, not self-inflicted. Since the dogs were resident, damage they might cause is foreseeable and thus uninsured. Sorry. |

To be honest, this is one of those cases where the insurance company will say that it was your own fault due to negligence! Wherever pets are concerned, it always seems to be a bit of a grey area! I'm sorry to sound so negative, but i think you will struggle to get them to pay up!! |

This is a joke, I hope. You can't be serious. |

An insurance company is not going to pay because your animals were locked in a lounge and ruined your carpet. And, you can give them any old excuse as to why the carpet is damaged, but they do have experts that come in to clean the carpets and test them. If the expert says it's dog pee, then the claim is going to be turned down. (And these experts have PH-D's in this stuff.)
If you didn't lock your pets up, then why don't you take up the ruined carpet with the person who did? If they refuse to pay, I'd take them to small claims court and and find someone else to sit for your animals while you're away. (Or better yet, have them kenneled.) |

They will not pay for this for one reason and one reason only. Your outright negligence caused the damage. It wasn't a major catastrophe that caused it, it was you being lazy and not letting your dogs out to pee. |

It's unlikely that you're insurance provider will payout for that, as it is owner negligence and could have been avoided. Obviously, it depends entirely on your insurance policy and if this was included or not. For something like this to have been included, you must be paying a significant amount each month/year for it. Only way of dealing with this is to call your insurance provider and explain - they're not all bad and will payout if the insurance covers it. |

It's unlikely you will be able to claim most policies exclude damage caused by domestic pets, vermin etc under the policy exclusions |

If you're honest then you will not get the claim paid out. But then again people are dishonest, it's human nature. |

Check that your policy does not have an exclusion for accidental damage or soiling by domestic pets.
