Sppurr | Home insurance quotes??? |
I have just moved into my flat and would like to take out contents cover insurance (i am only renting the flat) what do i need my policy to include???? |

hi, i work in household insurance and i would definately recommend that you get a policy with extended accidental damage cover. policies cover a limited amount of a/d cover but it is not for things like carpets, which is why it would be better to have a policy with extended a/d cover. if the flat has laminate flooring in it, that is considered under the buildings policy so it would be down to your landlord.
hope this helps xx |

The owner has his own building (Rental Dwelling Policy).
That covers damage to the building.
You just need renters insurance to cover your belongings against fire and theft and liability in case anyone gets hurt inside your unit.
Renters insurance does not cover damage to the owners building. His insurance does that. You just need renters insurance. Call the agent that handles your auto insurance first. If you go with them, you get discounts on the renters & your auto insurance too. |

If you are renting, then you need a Tenant insurance.

Most of the other home insurance offer you will see on the net are for home owners.

if the flat was furnished it should be covered by landlord for building and contents,so you should only need to insure you personel items |

Check what it says in your tenancy agreement. You might be responsible for accidental damage caused to the flat so you'd want to insure against that too (or take the chance of not insuring).
You will probably want to insure your personal possessions against theft and maybe against fire damage or accidental damage. You might wish the insurance to cover your possessions when you take them out with you (jewellery, handbags, cameras, phones, iPods etc.) and you might want it to cover them if you take them abroad on holiday (though check whether they would be adequately covered by your travel insurance. No point in paying twice).
Your insurer might ask you what the value of your possessions is and what valuable items it includes. If you put too high a value on it, you will pay more in premiums but they will only pay-out what it is really worth if you claim. If you put too low a value on it, they will not pay out the full value if you claim. Be honest with them.
Some insurance policies will pay out on a 'new for old' basis, so you can go out and replace the item that was lost or broken. Others will pay out the 'market value' so, instead of getting enough to buy new trainers, they pay out their idea of the value of trainers that are as worn out as they think yours were. Unless 'new for old' is specified in some way, then they will take wear and tear into consideration if you claim.
Always check the exclusion clauses on any insurance policy - things that the insurer will use as reasons NOT to pay out when you claim. Many of them are outrageous, even from supposedly good companies. |
