tootall | Home owner insurance question.? |
I had a lot of trees down on my fence during hurricane Ike and I found out my insurance company (American National) doesn't cover fences, but during Rita they did.
My policy doesn't really go into detail about what all is covered it only says outside structures covered for $14000.
Is this pretty common for insurance companies not to cover fences. |

tootall, Home insurance is actually very flexible. I'm not familiar with all the fine print of my homeowners policy, but my homeowners insurance agent is always helpful. Try contacting your agent or a agent in your city. http://www.usinsuranceadvisor.com/Home-Insurance.html They should be able to help you. |

For it to be covered before but not covered on the 2nd occurrence something must have changed. Did you make any changes to your policy like increasing your deductible?? Has the company made any changes to your policy such as not covering wind damage or ???? I would make an appt with your agent and go in and check with him and find out why...
Note in your policy there will be 2 different sections (at least ) one where is talks about what is covered which you mentioned the outside structures being covered for 14000 and another section for what is doesn't cover or what is excluded this is also where you want to look. If y our insurance company makes a change in what they will or wont cover they have to notify you in writing and that is normally done at the time your policy renews so you may want to check the envelope your renewals came in to see if there are any policy up dates ....... Good luck |

No.
Fences are covered under the "Separate Structures" portion of your homeowners insurance policy, which is 10% of the dwelling coverage, unless you have like a guest house or something that you have increased coverage for.
This coverage refers to any structure on your premises that is detached from your actual dwelling. Such as fences, shrubs, guest houses, gazeebos, landscaping etc.
There might be a clause in your policy that says that you can only claim this kind of thing once, but in all honesty, Ive never heard of such.
This is actually a pretty small claims issue, so if this is not covered, you might want to doublecheck to see if the more important issues are. |

No, it's not common for insurance companies to not cover fences.
However, it IS common, if you're in TX, LA, or FL, to have a percentage wind deductible, and damage to the fence might not be high enough to hit your deductible. Or, the limitation for tree removal is so low (could be $250 per tree, or $1000 for the whole shebang), that you won't notice much coverage.
I'm not familiar with your policy, but if they flat out aren't covering fences, it should say that somewhere in your policy. And I'd make my agent show me exactly where. |

I live in Texas and my fence IS covered. They depreciate it, it will cost $2000 to repair and they are only paying $1600. |

Homeowner's policies cover fences, they are considered to be appurtenant structures.
The claim is subject to a deductible, so it the damage to your fence does not meet your deductible, the insurance cannot make a payment on your claim. |

It depends on your state and your policy. It may be in the policy in a different section.
Call your agent and ask. |
