She can't just ignore the bills and hope they go away. Now that she has been turned over to collections, she will need to deal with the collection agency and they won't be nearly as nice as the hospital to deal with. She may be on her mom's insurance, but she is still responsible for the bills. She needs to work out a payment plan. Yes it will affect her credit. She also should talk to her mom about the bills, her mom may be able to help a bit. If she broke her neck, then she had a serious injury that may need treatment in the future too. |

Sorry to tell you that it is your girlfriend who is responsible for her own medical bills. Her mother carries a policy to help cover such expenses, but the actual responsibility for anything unpaid is your GF's. She is over 18 years of age, and became responsible for such bills as soon as she turned eighteen.
If your GF does not make appropriate arrangements to pay these charges somehow, it will definitely appear on her credit record as a negative. |

Your girlfriend is over 18 and is responsible for her own medical bills. The fact that she's on her mom's insurance policy doesn't take away her responsibility for the bills.
She made a huge mistake by not contacting the hospital about the bills *before* the account went to collections. Most hospitals have financial arrangements they can make for low-income people. (Which, I assume a 20 year old full time college student would qualify for.)
If your girlfriend had been responsible and contacted the hospital when she started receiving the bills, she may have had the amount she owes cut in half or more. And been able to work out a payment arrangement without it hitting her credit report.
However, once a person ignores all of the bills and the account goes to collections, you generally become ineligible for any special programs through the hospital.
Your girlfriend should consider this a lesson learned - when you start receiving bills, don't just ignore them and hope it all goes away. (Or try to pawn responsibility off on your mom.) Now, instead of a situation where she might have been able to work something out with the hospital and keep her credit record clean, she's going to get stuck having the full amount showing on her credit report.
Always, always, always contact your medical providers about any bills you start to receive immediately. You can find out if you're eligible for any special programs to help with the bill or if part of the bill might need billed to your insurance. By the time it goes to collections, its too late. |

Depending what type of collection agency it is (was the account "sold" to an outside agency or is it a collection service that works on behalf of the hospital), she may have another option.
I had a hospital stay which resulted in tons of bills. I was unemployed at the time, although I was still insured. I was able to call the hospital, explain my situation and my inability to pay. They sent me a form to complete for their charity program. My application was reviewed and I was granted a reduction of 1/2 of the bills. I worked out a payment plan on the remaining balance.
It is worth a call to the billing department at the hospital. |

~~Once it goes into a collection agency then it will hurt her credit if not resolved, and quickly. She is the responsible party because she is over 19 and is a legal adult.
Have her write or call the collection agency immediately and explain her financial situation. She needs to work out a payment program she can afford. Hospitals are sympathetic to these things so they will work with her.
The worse thing she can do is ignore them. It will end up costing her much more. So get some arrangement made so she saves her credit.~~ |

If your girlfriend is listed as the patient and the collection bills address to her, it will affect her credit. I would say that your girlfriend is responsible for the bill unless she's being completely supported by her mother. |

She (your girlfriend) is responsible for whatever charges are not paid by her insurance. She's an adult, over 18. Sounds like she needs to talk to the hospital/provider's business office ASAP. It will definitely affect her credit record. |

She should have a very considerate and friendly talk with the collection agency about this matter. Explain the situation and politely request their advice about how to resolve the situation. |

As an adult, she is responsible for the bills. Depending on your state, though, the creditors probably cannot collect. As far as her credit, you may be able to get any negative rating deleted by sending a letter to the reporting agency and disputing the claim. If the agency cannot verify it within 30 days, it must delete it under the Federal Fair Debt Collection Practices Act. |
