Hospital bills?
If someone was 77 yrs old and had medicare in the state of TN, will there be any bills for that person to stay in the hospital or will medicare pay it all? Or if medicare doesnt pay it all, will something else cover it?

Yes, there could be bills. If there is another policy in place, they might pick up the difference. If not, the person is responsible for the costs.

It is possible there may be some expenses not covered by Medicare. If the person is unable to pay those expenses, hospitals are covered by insurance for that reason. They may nag the person for payment, but there isn't much they can do to collect it. However, it would go against that person's credit. Not that one would care at age 77. County hospitals generally have difficulty collecting medical debts because many of their patients have very little income. Many people, elderly or not, are unable to pay the outrageous medical bills charged by doctors and hospitals. Unpaid medical debts are paid through taxes, and by those who can afford the astronomical costs via their insurance and out-of-pocket cash. There are few people who can afford to pay off a hospital debt in one lump sum.

try this it worked for my wife. if you can't pay your hospital bill call the hospital and ask to speak to someone about your bill and when they patch you through. you will be asked a few questions about your account with them like the invoice number. after a few questions you should state that the bill is too much to pay and be able to give examples of why it's to high to pay. and the hospital will either write that bill off entirely due to a charitable event. or put you on a bill payment system to pay it. we were able to get hers written off.

Look on this page.
http://www.medicare.gov/Coverage/Search/Results.asp?State=TN%7CTennessee&Coverage=38%7CHospital+Care+%28Inpatient%29&submitState=View+Results+%3E
It will tell you what medicare benefits are.

This page will also help you find a good medi-gap policy to pick up what Medicare doesn't cover.
http://www.medicare.gov/Choices/Overview.asp

If you are low income, medicaid is usually the coverage of choice. Check out this page for contact information in Tennessee:

http://www.cms.hhs.gov/apps/contacts/contactlist.asp?cmdUser=public&cmdSubmit=Submit&cboState=TN&optSrchType=0&cboOrgType=F&txtOrgName=&cmdContactType=All&desc=false&cboOrder=state&Pg=1&cboContactType=All&strOrderBy=5&intNumPerPage=10&intermediary=&fieldState=TN&fieldOrgType=F&subAgencyID=00745

Most hospitals have some sort of assistance available for people who meet the financial guidelines. But it is always best to have something in place at the time services are rendered. Most medi-gap policies have pre-existing clauses and medicaid will only go back 3 months from the date of application.

They will need a medicare suppliment to cover the rest. There are basically two kinds. One replaces medicare altogether, the other lets medicare pay their part then supplements the balance. The second one is usually much better!!! Get a good agent and be careful what you set up. Blue Cross does have a good product that my wife just took out. It's about $140 per month, but pays everything but meds. If they cannot afford insurance and have less than $999 in the bank, they might qualify for medicaid, which pays for everything. good luck. peace

Medicare doesn't pay everything, maybe you mean Medicaid? Regardless, whatever isn't picked up by Medicare is picked up by supplemental insurance or the individual's assets. If the person has less than a couple of thousand in assets, Medicaid will step in and pay some of the bill. The hospital will try to collect any amounts owing from the individual and then write off what ever is left after they give up on collection.

Medicare has limits to what it will cover .
Something else covering it would be called secondary insurance if the person had bought some of that .
If they did not buy secondary , they are responsible for the balances due .

They should cover at least 70% of it.

Hello,

I work with many clients who have had past hospital stays, and the bills followed them. From what I know, and what my grandparents have personally gone through, I believe Medicare will pay up to a % of the hospital stay.

As for the possible ambulance ride, and other bills associated with a stay in the hospital, those items can be disputed and over half can be removed from a credit file. Since there is no guarnatee, I can only tell you what I have personally been able to accomplish with my clients. For more information on that, please refer to www.rayscredit.com
