House robbed, what is a customary insurance pay out?
My big Brother (were in our mid 30's) has home owners insurance and his home was just broken in to. He filed a claim for over 5,000$ worth of missing items, most were big items he still had receipts for. One of the items was a 3 month old 42" flat screen (tragic I know). He paid about 1,400 for that item alone. His insurance company cut him a check for 1,300 is this right? They claimed depreciation, but seriously on over a 5,000 dollar claim to only receive 1,300 that seems fishy. Any one have any idea's of what he could do to fight this decision, without having to hire a pricey lawyer? It just makes me upset? What if this happens to me? We pay home owners insurance and think we are covered if the worst happens, and then it does and they don't have our back, what's up with this?

Your brother can ask the insurance company for a copy of their depreciation tables used to determine values. That would be the first step in determining how they came up with that figure.

Your brother should have purchased replacement cost coverage. Hopefully he did not decline the coverage. He, in fact, may have replacement cost coverage but may not be aware that the remainder of the insurance settlement is not paid until the TV is replaced. With replacement cost coverage he is paid the actual cash value of a loss until he actually replaces the stolen item at which time the remainder of the claim is paid less the deductible.

He should be talking to his insurance agent. Asking, If his property is not covered for replacement cost why not? And adding it now if he does not have the coverage.
