AJ S | How To Become An Insurance Adjuster? |
How do you become and get into the auto insurance business? Or specifically auto insurance adjusters? |
|

All the adjusters I've known, including myself, started out as a trainee at an insurance company. You have to learn how to adjust claims someplace and working as a trainee is about the best place I know of to start. |

Most insurance companies will require a college degree. So if you don't have one, that's where you should start. Once you have that, it's just a matter of how well you did in school and how well you interview. I disagree with the previous poster about low pay. While auto claims may pay less than other insurance, it still pays better than a typical first job out of college.
The part about having high case loads and the nastiest clients is absolutely true. However, if you enjoy busting frauds, there is no better place than to be in auto claims.

At the company I work for, adjusters are required to have a four year degree, usually in a business or finance field. Like someone said earlier, many companies scout for people at college fairs. And, in most cases, you're going to start out at the bottom of the totem pole, so to speak. To be an adjuster, you have to be tough, the kind of person who stands their ground, because trust me, people are rude as HELL to people in the insurance field, especially adjusters. People always want something for nothing. |

You my friend have posted a question I am ask ALL the time. This is indeed one of the most respected positions in the insurance industry closely followed by processers, etc. Not at all related to the OTHER side of insurance which would be salemen, agents etc.Totaly different world and I wouldn't listen to advise from an agent about being an adjuster or handling claims, they don't have a clue and have not had the training nessasary to handle a customer with a claim and mostly just get in our way of doing our jobs.
I am sure.I am a Catastrophe Insurance Adjuster and couldn't be happier. I travel the country for free, meals, airfare, hotels, rental cars, even the shirts on my back are paid by the company I am employed by.I have very little to worry about when it comes to job sercurity,I work for a company that has thousands of employees and I am a member of a team that just handles Automobiles and only includes 26 members for the entire country. We are indeed a select few,the best of the best and one way to understand what we do is to watch CNN or the Weather channel for a while. The best training I can advise for an auto adjuster is to work in a Body Shop.It is the ONLY way you will truly understand how to properly write an estimate for repairs. No amount of Insurance training willequip you better that on the job training.Welcome to our world my friend, climb aboard and hang on for the ride ! |

i worked for a major auto, home & life carrier for 3years but not as an adjuster. they were required to have a college degree but i am not sure what in. it required travel and a knack for dealing with difficult people face to face. i went to a different company to be a health claims adjuster which is behind the scenes with no interaction face to face; at least where i work. |

College degree and an opening at an insurance company. |

Yep, you pretty much start out at an insurance company, making not much money. They tend to hire at college job fairs, and train you up.
Auto adjusting is kind of the dregs of adjusting - lowest pay, highest case load, toughest clients. I'm not sure why you have your heart set on it, but it is a beginning. |
